SWMBO has one and she absolutely loves it - 
By the time you think about, a newer more powerful smartphone is on the market.
I've the HTC Hero now running Android 2.1 so similar but not quite as fast. Android is the best OS out at the moment IMHO and HTC make great phones.
But HTC don't give a damn about customer support so the software will be old after one year. They bring out a new phone every week at the moment.

Got one love it, its even better after you root it and put froyo (2.2) on it, flash works great, cameras great and picasa sync is also very good. Co-pilot(satnav) is spot on.

Had one since they were released. Think its great. 2 of my mates who have iphone wish they had the desire instead.
