Final Drive Failure Register

It's easy to rebuild a twin cam final drive. But the parts do cost a lot. I will add a photo in due course.

2005 r1200gs

FD failure @ 40000
and 52000
gone onto millers 85w 140 oil and 200ml this time
also same in oil in gearbox which has made it super smooth gearchanges
the first failure was not with me so hopefully a new service schedule and things will last longer

42k 2008 (07MY)

Rough and starting to get plenty of play.. Refurbished by Overland & Classics as a precaution.

My 2007 GSA 12 (53k miles) is booked in with Mikey next month for the FD re-build.

My 'issues' to date with the FD have been minimal (thankfully), with the flange being replaced (as per recall) and a new needle sleeve, shaft seal & lock ring fitted following a trip to France when I noticed an 'oil mist'. FD oil has been changed on every annual service since I've owned it as a matter of course.

However, as previously mentioned......prevention is better than cure, so with a Mikeyboy FD re-build completed she'll be like a shiny new penny!! :D

2006 25k

Noticable play side to side, outer seal failed and leaking and noisy to boot

Refurbed by Mikey :thumb

Just to add a point. If anyone runs the bike in gear on the centre stand the transmission will clatter so badly you'll swear its terminal.

It's normal, but noisy because there is no drive chain to damp out the backlash. Basically, don't do it and the worry wont happen. :)

04 with 51000 just sent to Mikeyboy, for refurbishment. I change oil in final drive and after looking on this forum, I checked for play in spline shaft, unfortunately found some. This is New bike for me so just getting it sorted ready for lock down to be lifted then of to the Brecon Beacons love my local roads.

Dropped the FD today and Input / Pinion shaft has about 1mm play... only recond 3k ago - thankfully under warranty with specialist dealer.

Sudden failure

57000, bearing cage broke up, seal went, oil all over back wheel.
It was done by BM previously at 44000. Caused the previous owner to sell.

Removed and dropped off at Mikeyboys on Wednesday, picked it up Friday, and rode Saturday.
Good on yer Mike!!
Still, a costly experience.
Perhaps I'll go back to a chain...

Dont wanna jinx myself but 101,000miles on original fd never had any problems with it apart from the a leak from the outer seal.
Is in need of a respray but cannae get lower bolt out because of fd protector.
