Exmoor Explorer 4th-6th May 2012

Is it ok to come on the Saturday for the of road ride and a social? Happy to make a donation to the organising costs....

Mine is a pogo of sorts ( xchallenge)

Ian

It's fine for you to attend, just book in with Zena at the site if you're staying over. I've kept this event as simple as possible so the only costs are your own.

A few pics to wet the walkers' appetites!

I had a wee amble on the moor t'other day, to recce a route for the walkers. Here's a couple of pics for you. A good full days walk with a well earned, and very tasty, lunch stop at a superb pub. I'll be looking for numbers wanting to walk nearer the time, as we may need to book a table if the groups fairly large.

Just book our place :thumb2

Wobbly box, bike, sidecar and dog all standing by. See you all there :D

Val & Jill.

Really looking forward to this. The pics for the walk confirms my original decision to join in for this.:thumb Hope to take a road trip to explore, having seen the pics of the coast also. :aidan

Have a few events between now and then - Wexford Invasion Part 11- and a trip to my daughter in Argentina so the time will fly by.

Cheers

Geraldine

Lunchables.

I took Sandy out for a spin in the lovely sunshine today and treated her to a birthday lunch at Woods' Bar in Dulverton (this is the start/finish point for one of the walks). We took in some lovely winding roads, really suited to the GS, and i'll post some details of some of the roads in case you'd like to try them for yourselves. I'll also post details of a few local pubs that are worth a ride to, in case you fancy exploring the area on your own.
Dulverton itself is a lovely little market town on the southern fringe of Exmoor, nestled by the River Barle. On a sunny day, like today, it's bright and welcoming, and will only get better as the season rolls on and all the trees and shrubs come out in colour.
Lunch consisted of home smoked pancetta and black pudding salad with a poached egg for me, and sliced steak in a warm balsamic dressing for Sandy (the steak just melted in your mouth, the beef was that good!), along with home cooked chunky chips. We followed up with warm chocolate soufflé with caramelised bananas and clotted cream, and poached pear in a port syrup with raspberry sorbet and creme fraiche mousse. Portion size wasn't huge but, two courses gave us a lovely filling lunch that was prepared and cooked to a very high standard and, with drinks, cost us just over forty quid. If you get time to visit Dulverton, then head for Woods, it's worth it.:ChrisKelly

As this event's on for May bank holiday, and if the sun shines, it'll get fully booked sooner rather than later. If you're thinking of coming, get your places booked to ensure you've got a pitch to sleep on. I'm sure Zena will give me a shout if there's no room left nearer the time.

For anyone coming down from the north and wanting a slightly more interesting end to their journey you maybe interested in the following suggestions rather than just M5 to J27 and heading up the A361.

Taking the quickest and easiest way in (as above) is about 45 miles from J23 (Bridgwater). You could come off at J24 and then head to Williton on the A39, turning left at Dunster by the castle, taking the A396 down past Dulverton to just west of Bampton and then join the B3227. Whilst only adding 10 miles to your journey it will take just over an hour longer. A nice ride though.

Coming off at J25 (Taunton) and taking the B3227 through Wiveliscombe will knock 4 miles off your journey but will add best part of 45 minutes.

I guess it depends on how far you have already travelled.

Anyone looking for pointers as to where to go over this long weekend.

Well the North Devon coast and beaches of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde are about 25 miles from the campsite.
A ride down the North Atlantic highway to Padstow is about 80 miles.
Exmoor is lovely with Dulverton, Dunster, Porlock and Tarr Steps worth a wander around.
The middle of Dartmoor is only 40 miles away and a nice ride.

squiggly bit from bridgwater to dunster and the bit down to bampton is on the list :D - M5 sucks :hammer

have route planned down to launceston via oke and morethingyhampton

:D

Thanks for the suggestions Trippy :thumb2 They sound like they're fun on the bike. A few years ago heading down to the first of the Airhead WeeKends we did a similar route. Most enjoyable.

Unfortunately in the name of comfort (Two people and a dog in a tent don't work for me), we will be travelling down in the camper with the sidecar on a trailer. Looks like we'll be using the easey route :thumb2

Val.

When you get to Bridgwater, turn left at the lights onto West St, left onto Enmore Road and through to Bishops Lydeard. Turn right on the main road and then left onto the B3224 and work your way over to the Exe valley. Detour to Dulverton and work your way over to Molland on some back roads... stunning route!

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr...Molland&mra=dpe&mrsp=3&sz=11&via=2,3&t=m&z=11

If you don't fancy this fully loaded, take it in as part of a route to The Halfway House at Pitney. Good for a round trip lunch stop. You can work out the rest of the route to suit yourselves.

Booked a while ago she never asked for any money at the time do you think I am still booked in? As it is a kid free weekend we should be on bikes hopefully still need to get mine on the road and see how my riding goes.
Just looked at the offroad bit now he has a new toy I am wondering what we will be on once he see's what is happening over the weekend!

Site programmed into me sat-nag.
