Riding to Lebanon

I am due to visit my daughter in Beruit in April ( she is studying there) and would really like to go by bike rather than fly. I am very aware of the risks involved, not least getting through or around Syria. Does Anyone have an experience of doing it or any ideas how it might be done and what visas might be required?

I was near the border last summer & happened to bump into some French travellers who were turned back by the Syrians. They were told that the only chance foreign visitors had of entering was with a solid reason...work/family/invite from local/etc...

PS intended to go to beirut but when I discussed my plans in a Damascus cafe (while watching bombing in Beirut on TV!) the syrians told me I was mad!
