Does anybody know of an alternative fuel carrying arrangment for the Dakar other than that offered by Touratech please. The Touratech capacity is good but it looks like somebodies melted the original dummy tank over the engine. Thanks.

Fuel tank

Hi, I had tinkered with the idea of fitting a staintune exhaust system. This would leave a void where the right side exhaust can would have been. I had intended to get a stainless fuel cell made to fit into this void, I had estimated that it would hold around 5 litres of fuel.

I would have done this already only for the expense of the new exhaust can.

Mike.

I was reading a site last night owned by a Brit (Called something like Kasim I think) who did a trip the hard way across the Sahara on his KLR600.......he'd taken two jerry cans, sliced off the edges off the lobes of the OE tank and welded the buggers on!!!!

With your objection to the TT kit being based on looks though, probably not the solution you're looking for...how about a fuel cell??

I've lost all my old bookmarks unfortunately but you should find some info with a google search......I think I might originally found the pages from the Iron Butt pages.

Funnily enough I got thinking about using Jerry-cans myself at the week-end which has led to to conclude that it is a combination of the looks and the price that deter me from the Touratech tanks. If there is a safe way of bolting them on, they would provide a lot of flexibility and are easily and cheapily replaceable in the event of a crash.

Thanks for the thought Fanum.

I think think this may have been KARIM. If so he nearly died of thirst!

Thanks for that-I'll have a look.

For any one else looking for additional fuel carrying have a word with Ernie at Overland Solutions. He's going to manufacture a couple of us a lockable 20l jerry can rack to go over the passenger seat area which will keep the weight in a fairly sensible place. Prices for these are sensible too-Come in at a fair bit less than £200, including the high-spec Jerry.

Cheers. Wouldn't fancy that set-up for touring though ! :yikes I'll post a photo of mine when it's done.

How did the auxilary fuel solution from Overland Solns work out?
Any Photos?

Hi,

Very well for what was originally requested -:) which was basically a jerry can positioned in a secure frame-work just over the passenger seat as part of a luggage system. The timing of your question is ironic in that I decided at the week-end that I wanted a more permanent solution that could be connected into the existing fuel supply so that there would be no unbolting/bolting necessary to gain access to the jerry can. I actually saw Ernie(from Overland) yesterday and he is currently looking at the technical requirements in terms of pressurisation/injection etc. I will post a picture or two of the current solution as soon as I can get some images off a friends lap-top.

Regards,

Mike

It gives you an extra 13 litres.

Hi Bert,

What type of fuel cannister are you using, and how did you mount them? (Are they Touratech panniers??)
