It was the ball part of the ball and socket linkage, the ball part had fractured. This was replaced by Vines South London under warranty and I have now ridden the bike around 350 miles since and the gear change is faultless

Sounds like a result.
Odd that this was missed by the dealer who you first reported the problem too. I can't imagine it was difficult issue to miss....

Hardly likely to cause an Intermittent fault, so the mechanic should have picked that up. Maybe a bit rushed or having an off day, but it doesn't make it right. Glad you got it sorted though.
