cleaning downpipes

I removed the chrome from my pipes (2000 1150GS) using a mix of flap wheels, varnish removing flex-disc and dremel with sanding drum, then removed the scratches left in the stainless pipes with a Cetem polishing kit (felt mops and resin), finally finishing with Solvol Autosol.
No more rusty chrome, just a little bit of bluing.
I would have liked to remove the header pipes to do it, but was advised the studs on the head might shear, so I did it with the Cat removed and managed to reach most of the pipe!
If the chrome coating is only discoloured and not rusty, you might get away with just polish.
