America's South West in 4 weeks

Looks and sounds like you're struggling to enjoy yourself :p
Go easy on Ruby she wouldn't be used to throttle happy Irishmen :rob

:aidan
I dunno about that Mandy. I rode a sister of Ruby's in California.:augie

Enjoy the trip Jochen.:thumb2

I had planned to do another 2 days last night but it was kinda a strange evening followed no dinner ! Now those of youse who know me well will know that 'no dinner' isn't something I do voluntarily or often so you can imagine the form

Anyway, let's try again. This one finger typing isn't the fastest & it's getting late but we'll get something done.

So Day 3 started where Day 2 had finished - in a motel in Indio run by a nice indian/ Pakistani family - very clean & inexpensive. Brekkie was a bit basic but once I'd uploaded the new route to the GPS's be were ready to roll.

First bit was back up Box Canyon cos it had been getting dsark as we came down last night & then back into Joshue Tree to exit from the northwest corner.

So, off to Box Canyon.
There's a lot of irrigation from the Salton Sea, actually a huge lake, which is close by. In addition to being the date shipping capital of Cali, there's a lot of citrus fruit, peppers & melons grown there,

Green stuff growing everywhere:

It's really just a bit of tar running up the middle of the canyon which gets covered in cr@p when it rains & the have to scrape it off again.

After you rise out of the canyon it gets a bit flat until you cross the 10 & reenter the park :

Thefirst part of the journey was through the bit we'd already done :

Halfway through the park Dave stopped with a puncture. With no centre stand we had to lift the back onto a large rock to turn the back wheel. Turned out to be a nail, miles from anywhere. Between the compressed air & a tin of goo we got him going (sort of). No pics cos he had the camera & I was doing the work :blast

By the time he got to the Ranger station it was flat again & he had about 10+ miles into town (Twentyninepalms). Found a bike shop that had a tyre & would collect the bike from the gas station & fix it. They collected it in a jiffy & then spent over 2 hours faffing around with it. But it turned out they'd never replaced the tyre that had been ridden flat all that way. Anyway, that was to be another days work.

We headed over the straightest, wierdest road I'd ever ridden until we got Parker where we dined in a Pizza Hut (small town America is not the culinary delight that the likes of France & Spain can be - it's quantity over quality usually :() & slept in a Motel6 - clean, quiet & good value.

That's all folks, tune in again tomorrow, roughly the same time...
And thanks for following along :beerjug:

nice photos

since when did you turn down pizza small large or other wise :D

keep it coming

Some great shots there my man:thumb2

It's hard not to get good photos with so much great subject material. But I'm a little limited by the fact that I have to take a lot 'on the fly' so there'll be some blurred, crooked etc. One of the cameras has a short lens & it's amazing how many pics you can get the tip of a finger in :augie

:blagblah:blagblah Never mind all that, just keep them coming JR.

Good to talk to you earlier. Sent you some info via e-mail and WhatsApp. :thumb2

Day 4 - Parker, AZ to Boulder City, NV

Last night we'd just gone over the border into Arizona (from California) to get a bed. After a leisurely brekkie - we're on holidays dammik ! - we crossed back into California & rode up the west side of the Colorado River as far as Parker Dam which we rode over, crossing back into Arizona.

Lake Havasu :

From there it was Hwy 95 along Lake Havasu to Lake Havasu City where we turned off to see London Bridge - you know, the one some rich American bought when he thought he was buying Tower Bridge, or so the story goes.

Not terribly exciting to look at :

This yoke must fairly shift :
092.jpg

Back onto 95 & then I 40 for a short spell - woulda been even shorter if I hadn't been looking for gas (that's petrol to you) stations on the gps as our turn-off came & went ! After a slight detour we were back on track, riding a minor road with the grandious title of Oatman Highway. We stopped in Golden Shores (I can only assume there used to be water in the huge flat dry pan out the back. Or maybe it's a seasonal thing ?) The lady in the gas station toook great pleasure in telling us we'd die of heat stroke in all our bike gear ! Rather that than lose all our skin in an off I thought. Lunch there was a coke, an ice lolly & a big bag of potato chips (aka crisps ) :D

From there we were briefly onto an old part of Route 66, where we encountered the first real bends since Joshua Tree, and then onto Mohave Valley Hwy to Bullhead City.

Route 66 :

More tomorrow :comfort

As you ride along the main street of Bullhead all the buildings are single & two story and suddenly you come around a bend and see the huge casinos on the Nevada side of the Colorado. Very wierd,,,,

We had planned to ride across Davis Dam at the bottom of Lake Mohave but the road was closed so we'd to Hwy 163 which took us over the hill and back onto Hwy 95, a boring straight dual carriageway to Boulder City.

We went walkabout that night looking for somewhere to eat and someone spotted a steak house but unfortunately they didn't do 'fine dining' on a Tuesday so the choice was just snack type stuffso we moved on ! We settled on a cafe with outdoor seating where I had a really nice meat & cheese platter (no pics, I was too hungry !) The cafe had a huge list of beers from all over the world, which the lads sampled several of , but the only non alcoholic one they had was poxy Kaliber from Ireland :blast Harp is bad enough with alcohol in it (yes, I do remember that far back !) but makes no sense without it :eek

Another great instalment.:thumb You lot look like proper tourists in all your gear!:D Can't you get some Kevlar jeans?:augie I'm just jealous as I'm sat at my desk working.:blast:D
