Looks like we have enough bods and bodettes to American this a goer.

I wlll lock the thread until. I have had a chance to see what's what on the hotels and routes front.

Cheers,

Richard

Routes

I have had rough stab at possible routes down and back from Annecy.

(A) ROUTE DOWN

Ignore the top bit which trundles off through Belgium. It's just Google Maps doing something silly which I can't be bothered to sort out.

Anyway, 530 miles give-or-take, so within the 250 miles a day limit which I try to work to with a group if there is not a chunk of motorway.

Overnight in St Omer, or similar.

Day one: Reasonably start, then St Omer to say Avallon

Day two: Reasonably early start, Avallon to Annecy.

(B) ROUTE BACK

560 miles, probably spread over two and a half days. Again, it's just hacked out to give folks an idea or two, nothing more.

I am still half tempted tempted by the idea of getting a mid-afternoon, mid-week train crossing back, just to reduce the queuing at the Chunnel. Though I have become much more stoical about it of late.

Chatted to some likely Wanders today.

I can understand that bods are keen to get some dates into their employers' diaries. So I'll pull my finger out next week. :thumb2

FIRMISH DATES.....

Out: Friday 23 August.

Train at lunchtime OR late afternoon. Either way, we will be somewhere in France on Friday night. I would like to get to Annecy in two days. It's a reasonable schlep from Calais to Annecy but dead easy if you stay on the motorways. I would rather favour non-motorway roads (where sensible) but they are much slower with a group. Starting in France saves us at least two hours compared with kicking-off in the UK.

Return: Saturday 31 August.

Train somewhere between 14:30 and 18:30. This will leave some of Saturday and all of Sunday for any punters who do not live within spitting distance of the Chunnel to get home. I would like to get back to Calais in two and a half days, taking a slightly longer route on the way back.

If the dates change, they will only move by one day either end, going out on Thursday and / or returning on Sunday. I can't be exact at the moment, not least as the hotels are not taking bookings until mid-Januray and I haven't done anything firm about the routes. For instance, we could take three to come home (or ride down) if we detour a bit. But I hope this is enough for bods to get something blocked out in their work diaries.

Annecy - Some suggested routes for when we are there

I have hacked out some route suggestions for when we are in / around Annecy.

I planned on letting us have three full days in the Annecy area, so I have created a number of alternatives. Some long, for maybe day two, perhaps? And, some quite short, maybe for day one and / or day three?

It probably looks like a bit of an explosion in a paint factory but, if you click on each individual route in Mapsource, they should light-up and stand-out. You should then be able to see how they relate to each other and / or how they could be chopped around to make versions longer and / or shorter.

It is a Mapsource file, hosted on Dropbox:

News....

I think I now have our rooms reserved in Annecy, for four nights:

Monday 26 August

Tuesday 27 August

Wednesday 28 August

Thursday 29 August

It's the Hotel Restaurant Arcalod Doussard

http://www.hotelarcalod.fr/accueil_en.html

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Hot...d,+Haute-Savoie,+Rhone-Alpes,+France&t=m&z=19

Seems to do OK on TripAdvisor:

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_...rcalod-Doussard_Haute_Savoie_Rhone_Alpes.html

Because of the season lots of hotels like to work on a half-board basis (breakfast and evening meal). That's OK with me.

I am just waiting for confirmation that we have:

  • One double room (gone to a mate of mine, Ian and his wife, Bernie) EUR 146 a night inc. meals
  • Six single rooms (one gone to me) - EUR 78 a night inc. meals
  • One twin room - EUR 77 a night inc. meals

Now, we probably have some oversubscription, so I will be as fair as I can be:

  • First to bods who are Subscribers to UKGSer as of today.

  • Second to bods who have been in regular contact with me via PM. These are:

Iand46
Yorkie
Byron

  • Third to bods in the same order as they posted up interest:

Neil DD
Wessie
Karl P
Bakerlonglegs
Tommymoto

From that list, we can probably do a bit of juggling around and / or hope that I can get another twin room..... This of course assumes that chummy the hotel owner can confirm my booking..... If bods can let me know if they are happy to share, I'll do my very best.

I will PM everyone so that they can see that the thread has come to life.

If I can get a firm landing on the rooms by the end of this week I can look for our hotels on the way down and back etc and not least sort out our crossing and return dates.

Thanks Richard, prices ok, please put me down for a single room. :thumb

Hi Richard,

Well done for sorting the accommodation out!

Ill take a single if t here's one available.

Do we book in directly with the hotel?

I'm in.

I'm happy to share a twin. Not so sure someone would want to share with someone who snores very loudly and other reasons.

I guess the plan is to start the trip on Sat 24th, PM tunnel to assemble in St Omer for the first overnight stop. 1 more overnight before hitting Annecy on the bank holiday Monday.

I like the idea of a lunch time crossing on the last day, presumably Sunday 1st Sept?

6 days to book off work then, taking Monday 2nd Sept off to do some laundry etc.

Sorry, with regret I'm out of this one, which is a pisser :( Clash of holiday plans and commitments elsewhere.

Have a good one.

Annecy Trip

Hi there Richard
Thanks for the post and I would like to be included if there is space. This just fits into the very last part of my summer hols so perfect. I would prefer a single room but will share if it helps. Thanks for all your planning so far.
Regards
Byron
