Show us your K bike

All K100's had the same radiator.
But funnily the larger K1100 has a thinner lower capacity radiator.
Hence why the fan is forever blowing when riding one around in london.

Thanks for that Neil. I knew the radiator changed at some point but wasn't sure when. :thumb2

An early model K100, pre 86.
Does the engine rattle from cold ?
The early models needed leaded fuel.

Thank you a lot for that Neil :thumb2
Its down as an 85 C reg RS int owd log book
Is it lead additive then or will it run ( It does at moment but is a tadge noisy at first startup) OK enough to not to bother with additives - I would imagine its a "fun to mess about for a while bike" and long distance trips will not be done at all
Anyone done milage with a leaded engine about to comment
Has anyone used one of those "drop this catalist diode do dah in yer tank jobbys"
Thank you for the advice folks

Mick,

Mines an 85. has run for years on unleaded (Electric Monk on here was previous owner, so i know :thumb ). No issue and i never considered it on a K.

Lead bollox in tank:
I considered it when i got my first BM- an 82 R65 (which is of course an entirely different engine  but anyway), but after researching it, i could never be convinced it would do anything more than (perhaps) leech lead into the fuel by abrading itself off the tank innards. and also rub all the crap in the tank into jet size pieces :blast . So i didn't bother.
'recieved wisdom' says that with a reasonably higher mileage done on leaded (40k was the figure i remember) an R would have enough lead embedded into the head by that stage - there was no need to change anything. :nenau
Though it sounded optimistic to me, i ran it on unleaded - i kept an eye on the Bike and it never gave me a problem. Oh - and being my first weird-old-mans-Bike :D i was fussy with it. ;)
ANYhow,
hope that's some help, but if there's any mistakes - i'm sure an adult will be along soon to correct my errors. :D

According to my Haynes manual, BMW modified the valves in about 1986 to run on unleaded. If the frame number is later than 81107, you should be ok. I didn't bother reading any further as mine's got an 86xxx number but I'm happy to look it up if you'd like to know.

Edit to add that the number quoted above only apllies to the K100RS, there are different numbers for the other models.

Just got this and will be messing about with it over the winter. Needs a bit of smartening up but not spending more than I have too. Anyone have any free bits or ideas please. Needs some different bars for a starter, does anyone know what fits without altering all the cables = I would like some wider ones. The exhaust is different but sound OK . May need a oval end can as well

Bloody hell Mick - thats a rat bike - MFN every wednesday night for sure.
Jabbers got a can for ya if ya want it and welcome to the fold :blast

Thought I'd try out my new (to me) camera today and as Andy (Judge) moaned about my chosen location previously, it seemed like a good excuse to have a run out in the South Hams:

Mike,
dont park that too near a field of rape oil seed - if you leave it unattended - you'll never find it again among all the yellow. :augie

:D

Smartening up why it looks bob on to me if its not broke etc welcome to the dark side Mick, you will now realise what you have been missing all these years fukin about with enduro type shitey thingies, blow the tyres up and ride it, talkin to a guy in matlock today 380k in 3 years as a dispatch rider changed the oil every 100k never let him down apart from dead battery and 1 second hand clutch:D

PS can you remember riding that black one I had you know the one you said y wont get me on one of them:rolleyes:

By tomos afternoon I'll be riding one of these old girls to her new Cheshire home from Sussex.

I'll let you know how I get on.

1989 K100LT. 250 miles solo yesterday. Littered with senior moments, top box blew open, ran out of fuel etc:D

Another 200 miles today, two up. Less senior moments.

Bought for a September Spanish jaunt I think the old girl will do an admirable job but here's my unvarnished thoughts anyway.

To state the obvious and use the much abused vernacular, it's an old skool bike, slow steering and steady with a quirky powerplant.

In addition it's about as hip as 6 button Oxford bags and stacked wedges at this time:D

It's reasonably comfy. I have the Comfort seat which does what the label suggests but does force me into one position. A comfy one for a tank of petrol but one position nonetheless. Gets a bit uncomfy thereafter but doesn't get any more uncomfortable after that;)

Weather protection. Yet to do a proper deluge but a decent envelope of calm created by the fairing, good hand protection from the mirrors and the ability (touring screen) to ride visor up most of the time.

Engine. Strange old beast from my viewpoint as a Jap four fan. Slow revving yet torquey and much happier, less vibey, in the 80-100mph region where frankly it does a great job IMHO.

Handling. As said before slow but steady. It's been a long time since I've waited quite so long to swing from leaning one way to the other on twisties/roundabouts. Watch out for protruding stands/exhausts

Ride. Maintains composure but moves around a lot and has been bottoming from time to time two up. NB just noticed the rear shock is on minimum preload lol so this should improve.:D

Tank range. This bike may be capable of quite reasonable economy in the, fairly vibey, lower reaches of the rev range but hit the sweet spot 80 plus and I'd want fill up at 140 miles or so to be on the safe side.

Strangely enough;), it rides like a 1980's bike and, noting the previous poster's responses, it's daft to suggest that very real advances have not been made since, yet still it's still going to be a hoot riding 'Ethel German', as she has been monickered and I look forward to it:thumb2

Not taken any piccies yet so the ad version will have to suffice:

My K100RS 16-valve turbo conversion, 95% complete, after 300km.
It's the first time I've done a turbo conversion so I've kept it simple, and discreet!
Small Garrett turbo running 7psi of boost, SU carburettor with modified float bowl and gravity feed fuel supply, and modified early K ignition box.
I know that a fully mappable injection system would be more efficient, but with a total conversion cost of just less than 900 euros, I'm not complaining!
It starts easily on the button, idles like a V8 and accelerates extremely quickly, on bumpy roads the trail bars are very useful!
It hasn't been on the dyno yet as there are a few jobs to be finished, but I would estimate at least a 50% increase in power and torque.
Downsides? Rear tyres aren't going to last very long!

Certainly the neatest turbo conversion I've seen. Very nice. :thumb2

Really nice that. Did you do any work to the Engine to prep it for Turbo?
I quite fancy putting a turbo on a CBX1000 special.

Thanks for the positive comments.
Engine modifications are mainly modified breathers, ie larger. The pistons are standard, so it's still 11:1 compression ratio.
I started with just 3psi of boost, then 5psi and now the wastegate starts opening at 7.25psi and is fully open at 8.7psi with no evidence of detonation.
I plan on running it as it is for a while because the acceleration is more than enough for the road.
The coolant temperature hasn't risen above 88°C even during a few 30° days so the increased mixture temperature running a draw-through set-up doesn't appear to be a problem.
Early days...............!

K1

Well here is mine following a major rebuild after my little "off" in Germany.

<a href="http://s1125.photobucket.com/user/martincollins1907/media/DSC01537.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l600/martincollins1907/DSC01537.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DSC01537.jpg"/></a>

Couple more bits and pieces to sort out - non-functioning abs, hazard light switch, accessory socket. But today I have polished the seat!

I am having the "1000cc" stickers made because I couldn't find them anywhere so if anyone else wants any then let me know.

ABS probably just needs re-setting. Find the blue three pin blanking plug on the loom. On the K1 it's taped to the section of the loom that's on the left side of the frame.

Pull the blue bit out and earth the centre pin:

Switch the ignition on, press and hold the ABS test button and count to 20 or so. Switch off ignition.

The hazard warning switch on this age of bike still had the tiny bulb inside to illuminate the switch when in operation. The bulb jumps out and wedges itself under the rocker. Open the switch, fish out the bulb and throw it away (BMW stopped fitting the bulb on subsequent models).
