brembo brake callipers- wtf

metal polish the pistons...remember that.. not all the length of the piston is used..
Oh and one more thing....NEVER MESS WITH BRAKES...EVER....EVER...EVER...
If in any doubt, and I mean even 1% of doubt.....If you are not happy...100% happy then change it till you get 100%...
I would spend £300 on brakes, but only spend £30 on going faster...

Hi everyone, just read through the more recent posts and thought I'd add that since my last post I've done probably (at least) 3k miles and there's no problems at all. I'm really pleased that its all worked out and ill definatly go down this path again next time.
Will also add that i told the BMW guys what id done and they checked it over as part of my full service and said it was fine.
I'm still in disbelief at the cheek of BMW for trying to charge for a full caliper when there are pistons available through other suppliers. :ronno
Thanks for the input,
MEB

Rear brake caliper

I've just spent about 2 hours looking at this problem on the internet. Shame I didn't find your post earlier. My bike is a 2000 X F650 with a sticking rear caliper. Just want to confirm its the same bike and get BMW seals from Motoworks and if the pistons are knackered KLR 650 ones work ?

Just reading this, as we've found that Denise's 650 has a sticking piston on the rear. Will strip it first before ordering anything.

I think MEB said he bought 32X28.5 and 30X28.5 ones and that the one he used was 1mm shorter than the failed one. I'd like to know which one of the 2 he used though as...am I right in thinking you would just go to that site and buy the next one up (1mm up)? So, 33x28.5? :nenau

Can anyone tell me why they think a piston needs replacing just because it has a hole on the pad face please.? ....:augie

i think this bike is the later 650 twin
if your bike is a late funduro and the caliper turns out to be scrap i have a used one i can sell you:D

Denise's bike is an F650 GS, which is the twin cylinder model. The rear caliper wasn't too bad, benefitted from a good clean and a re- grease. Not sure why there is such uneven pad wear, but will watch the new ones closely.

I recently cleaned my 1200 rear Brembo which was sticking. It looked fine underneath and the pads were binding. But a few weeks later the disc is getting warmer than it should so I think it needs a proper strip-down to clean the seals.

Hi guys, been busy lately so not been on for a while. I'm glad that people have found this thread interesting/helpful.
In regards to freelancer2011, I could not find the 'next size up' on any of the websites I visited (granted I didn't spend hours searching). It may be possible to buy them as a special order but if you use the KLR ones, it makes no difference to the braking but has the added benefit that you can order next day from your local Honda dealer. I used Hunts in Manchester.
my bike is the 2008 f650gs twin so would be later than yours JDA297.
Kaister, I didn't just replace the pistons because the pad faces were broken. I've been brainwashed to believe that when stripping and cleaning a calliper, you should replace pistons and seals as good practice. Granted it made me smile when you pointed that out because like I say, I've been brainwashed so didn't think twice about the need of new pistons.
Thanks =)

I recenetly spent ages farting about with th erear brake caliper on my old (single) 650 because of brake sticking. It turned out to be the master cylinder...

Looks like you have this fun to come on your F700GS:D

Its been a while and memory is shite, however I'm sure I used two different types. One was the 30mm that your link shows and another was 32mm?

the link below is only a quick find and you'll probably find them cheaper elsewhere.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-SLR-650-V-97-Front-Caliper-Piston-Seal-Kit-/180952339622

I remember that it worked out cheaper to go to my honda dealer and buy the slr set as opposed to buying two different sized pistons and seals from a specialised piston site.
...I'll again point out that I'm not the most patient person when it comes to browsing the internet's millions of web pages. If its not on the first, maybe second page of google then I usually give up and type something else in.

Hi All,

Sorry to resurrect but does anybody know if the Honda pistons mentioned by Smythson will replace the REAR calliper ones, too?

If not, anyone know what I can go with? :)

Cheers,
Lab.

Lab,

I haven't gone as far as checking pistons but the calipers on our bikes have been around a while and used on lots of bikes so should all be compatible (he says!) Honda's SLR650W 1998 and KTM 690 Enduro 2009. I would have a look at these two first as the period matches and the weight / performance of the bikes is not far dissimilar.

I would pop into a Honda dealer (more of them and cheaper parts) to check. That said when i popped into KTM and Honda and they heard i was not on one of their bikes they were not too helpful at all...

I should've updated my previous post - I ended up going with David Silver Spares ( http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/SLR650W-1998/ unfortunately they don't show the piston in stock) The KTM dealer kept messing me about. If i recall correctly the actual caliper stays the same and it's the hanger changes on each bike.

Another option is to find the exact dimensions of the piston - there are assorted companies that supply aftermarket pistons or you may be able to source one from a non-brembo caliper.

Best,

S

 Smythson, belated HUGE thanks as ever!!! :)

Hope you're well!
Lab :D
PS - I think it's time I renewed my dues (before I come across as cheap!!) ;)

Thanks to MEB for posting about replacement pistons for Brembo brakes. After being told you could not buy new ones by my Local Beemer dealer and Motorworks i was relieved to spot your thread and have now ordered 2 pistons via your link.

Its what makes all this Internet thingy worthwhile

Cheers:beer:

actually nevermind, just checked one of smythsons links and it reckons 32X28.5 and 30X28.5.
gunna take the plunge i think and buy these tomorrow when i get paid.
thanks to those who have helped- and i'll make sure i post back after i try fitting them :thumb2

Any one know how MEB got on with using these pistons, in particular when the pads wear down is there any chance of pistons popping due to them being shorter or am I worrying about nothing.
