Cali 3: in search of the lost gears.

a new output shaft nut is not expensive, and i'd buy one anyway looking at that, but i doubt you'd get a dremel in there without doing damage to something else :nenau

~~~ i'm very good at fiddly/finesse needed work. I am confident all i'd damage is the bearing with the inevitable filings.
Is that bearing pricey?
a deep socket and an impact gun will spin it off, but you still need to torque it back up somehow.
~~~ that's the problem; getting access to an impact gun :( - no idea how i'll torque it yet! :blast

when you do get it off, look out for the little ball bearing that locks the speedo drive to the shaft ;)

~~~ Ta, i hadn't copped that. :thumb2
you did get the hardened steel washer out from under the cable drive thing? sometimes it's not there, as a previous mechanic has lost it :rolleyes:
~~~ *nodding like a toy dog on a parcel shelf* - Ohh yes. ;)

space left for witty comment. (well - i have an hour to think of one :rolleyes: )

I don't know how much the bearing is, but its not the pricey one. That's at the other end of the box.

As to torquing it up: you can hit it with the windy again, but I'm not practised enough at that to estimate how tight it is, or you can hold the shaft still with an old UJ in a vice or with a handle welded on. Wedge that in against a cranked ring spanner on the nut and do it up 'kin tight :)

I love the use of the battery to lean the (metal) gearbox against; what could possibly go wrong?

Cookie,
Thanks. :thumb2

ahutcheon,
the battery's been a doorstop for years. :D

Right, today's the day this gets 'interesting'. :pullface

If you don;t know the story???

Perhaps then you can keep your comments to yourself !

Just like a lot of us the OP does not have funds to have a 1200 or a 1200 Twat cooled version or the latest in gizmos and gadgets!

So if you can't be constructive Please make your way to the exit and go find something constructive to do instead of "dissing" folks efforts!

I was going to say to "Fuck off and when you got there to fuck off some more, etc etc!" but I was worried I may sound like ATT

Jeez - just throw the heap of junk into the bin.

Dr. F.
Thank you. Pretty much my feelings too.

Tobers,
needlessly cruel post - one mans junk is anothers pride and joy. This 'Bike has taken me all over Europe and has a huge grin factor that its appearance does not show. And i dont give a shit how it looks to anyone; i like it, that's all that matters. :p
Actually, i probably get a perverse pleasure in that it functions way better than it looks, costs buttons to run and keeps up with any company :green gri
Yes - obviously it aint effing running right now. :rolleyes: - but i aint complaining. It will, soon enough. :bounce1

Now,
more pics.

Those of a sensitive nature - look away now.
What an Og uses when he cant get hold of a lathe to 'trim' a socket. :eek:
Before anyone sez it; DILLIGAF? :nenau - no, it worked. :thumb2

It helps the thinking process. So, sorry to those expecting something more - feel free to leave now.

Right, now they've fecked off :D, if yer still here - have a look at these.

There's a little oil on the front of the box. It dont smell of cats wee, so i reckon it's 20/50 - working it's way in via an engine breather? (thanks ghiribizzo for the tip to look :thumb2 ). There's not a lot anywhere else, as far as i can see. :nenau <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/7w0PwgCAdg0PEM2eQKZeCMNrOPp0J9VjAYACV_X6MiA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-S676hR-aJuM/Ug6bkLrCijI/AAAAAAAACSY/IYrZcRqesIU/s400/DSCF0858.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/110392685136049648662/GuzziBoxRebuild2013?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite">Guzzi 'Box Rebuild 2013</a></td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/DhkyhwZS-CLJBouXuZ4NqcNrOPp0J9VjAYACV_X6MiA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-wfRHe2VMUuc/Ug6cBBkhETI/AAAAAAAACSo/LCO9VzX-LO0/s400/DSCF0859.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/110392685136049648662/GuzziBoxRebuild2013?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite">Guzzi 'Box Rebuild 2013</a></td></tr></table>

One minor worry. :augie There's a little ball bearing that is supposed to be in around the speedo drive 'area'- there's pics later. Anyhow, could it possibly have slipped in here as i popped the rear cover off? :blast

Now, that little feckin ball bearing, if it was actually in there to start with. :rolleyes:
See the little hole, just behind the oil seal? That's where it's supposed to sit and is apparently famous for disappearing from / being left out / forgotten.
I assume it's also famous for dropping into the 'box when yer not looking and then ricocheting around before breaking something else and causing you to take the entire plot apart ... again. :mad:

WTF does the ball bearing go again? :confused:

More important, do i have to remove the rest of them shafts to ensure it aint in the 'box? I've gone over it with a magnet and dredged the bottom - nothing i can find in there.
Bearings.
I'll check what i can reach (the rear of the 'box). Still thinking about the front. They should be o.k - done 30k miles. :nenau Opinions welcome.
Otherwise it seems a new spring is the main thing?
-just look and renew the obvious otherwise.
... It's late, i could be wrong. I'll look at this in the morning. :hide

Lastly, a big thanks to my therapists, gurus and advisors; :D
Jay and Ghiribizzo - :clap without whom the O.C.D would have taken over by now.
But most definite thanks to Mrs Og, without Her the poor Bike would still be rusting in peace. :kissy2

Og,

p.s; First time ever for me to post a thread with pics running through it - not links or uploads. In all the years i've been here. :blush

Jeez Og - whit ur ye like?
Pictures in threads, not links? Gearbox in bits? haha!
The missing 'ball' fits in the side of the output shaft (under the nut that was staked) and in the notch in the worm drive which drives the speedo; NOT where you mentioned...

ghiribizzo,

yer quite right of course. Even as i read it back to myself i thought 'that dont make sense' :confused:.

if it wasn't showing any signs of distress changing gear or making noises - then just put it back together.

rooting around in there is likely to cause more problems than not.

Doing a grand job there, and educating me to boot. Keep up the good work.

O.k - so it's the afternoon after the night before. :pullface
Looking back at all this ... :blagblah

ghiribizzo,
you dont want me near that - all them orifices i could drop ball bearings into :eek

Oldrat,
You are a man of few words - that's most kind. :D

Kaister,
i imagine a lot of people are nodding in agreement with your post!

Apart from checking for bent selectors - I'm not going near it today.
Unless a damn good reason becomes apparent - i'll do a 'shopping list' tonight/tomorrow and get onto Motomecca first thing monday. :thumb

No 'apparent reasons' to look for more problems (e.g. bearing problems) so i plan to do a shopping list and rebuild. Stop me now if you foresee trouble.
Thanks.

Now, where did this o ring go?
here?

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/giZPAQM5FBR-S51CMXd_jsNrOPp0J9VjAYACV_X6MiA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ba23imDGHFI/UhDpp_ZN8AI/AAAAAAAACW0/v1WQuvzknTc/s640/DSCF0884.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/110392685136049648662/GuzziBoxRebuild2013?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite">Guzzi 'Box Rebuild 2013</a></td></tr></table>

or here? There's a groove - but unless the o ring stretched to hell it dont look right.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/tjCFOJcikTFHe3PcE7HKzMNrOPp0J9VjAYACV_X6MiA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ct2CnBSG9sE/UhDpw1A_QFI/AAAAAAAACW8/_IOKJQeg03U/s640/DSCF0885.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/110392685136049648662/GuzziBoxRebuild2013?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite">Guzzi 'Box Rebuild 2013</a></td></tr></table>

Do the fork selectors appear to be in the right place? (is there a wrong place?!)

I'll get a new thrust bearing and little rubber seal on the clutch pushrod itself and the two rubbers on it.
The only bearing in any casing that (i think) may need replacing; clutch pushrod slides in and out of here - the bearing can move a little in and out (forward and backward) is this acceptable?

gearchange return spring.
sits like so? (and just how do you get it to sit still and in place while you assemble?! :rolleyes: )

Shopping list so far;
~ O ring.
~ gasket for casing
~ single ball bearing for speedo drive
~ return spring
~ rose joints or whatever to tighten up linkage / cure sloppy/ loose gearchanges
~ pushrod thrust bearing, oil seals x 3 (2 on the rod, 1 at the bearing)
~ output shaft retaining nut.

~ perhaps new bearing in casing for clutch pushrod

So,
there's my neuroses for ye. :p
But i'd rather worry now / just ride it after. :thumb

Any opinions welcome. Ta folks. :beerjug:
I'm off to clean the brakes now - good time to look at seals and order them too if needed. ;)
