Heading over to Jard Sur Mer next Monday 2nd September. Staying in a Gite for 7 days. Any tips for rideouts or site seeing, would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Allan F

Our first experience of foreign camping holidays was some thirty years ago when we took our three small children in our Escort estate and drove across France to Jard-sur-Mer and stayed in the village centre campite in a Eurocamp tent. We returned again the following year too. It's probably been changed out of all recognition now but it's a pretty quiet sand dune-type coastline with little to see. Try Les Sables d'Olonne a few miles to the north. They close to seafront to traffic in the evenings and the people watching public are entertained by bands, jugglers and steet entertainers. La Rochelle is to the south.

Saint Nazaire is always worth a visit to see the U boat pens. Noirmoutier island is connected by a bridge and also a 4.5 km long causeway which floods twice a day. Worth a look. If you take the small coastal lanes up to St. Nazaire there are several fortifications remaining from WW2, including Le Grand Blockhaus at Batz-sur-Mer, a huge bunker on five levels. The medieval city of Guerande is nottoo far away and Nantes is a lovely city with it's Château des ducs de Bretagne and Les Machines de l'île are spectacular.

We used to 'do' this area frequently when the kids were in their teens and we loved this place - http://www.puydufou.com/en - it's a sort of cross between an outdoor museum, a theatre and a theme park (without rides). Very unique experience - have a look at the website to get a flavour of it, if the subject matter is at all your thing it's a great day out.

Parc régional of Vouvant-Mervant is worth a visit - it's seven very steep and wooded valleys damned into one enormous reservoir system, pretty villages, places to eat - loads of walks/mtb trails and lake swimming - there's also a zoo/wildlife park if kids are involved. It's just north(ish) of Fontenay-le-Comte which is a nice, unspoiled market town - castle's worth a wander round.

Marais-Poitevin - on the way to La Rochelle (S/W of Fontenay) - area of managed/reclaimed marshes and waterways known as 'the green Venice'. Guided boat trips (worth doing for the history aspect if you're interested) cycle hire, loads of restaurants and pretty little towns/villages.

Many thanks for taking time to reply. Will definitely do the Blockhaus & the submarine pens. Going to Take in the Normandy Landing sites on the road home.

Thanks Gents.

Then definitely visit Aromanches and see the terrific museum. We also visited a nearby German War Cemetery, a complete contrast to the US one at Omaha.
