The cheaper and nicer hotels are down in the old (Jewish) quarter.
Can't remember the name of the one we stayed in back on Greg's tour , but it was a good'un and there are lots of pics of it here if you can find the RR.

Stayed at the Hotel Seven Days. Nice place with an underground car park.
