Sell it and get yourself a chain driven bike- yet another damning testament as to why not to take high tech toys in (lower) tech countries where you need a fully kitted out BM-wobble-U workshop to fix. Djeeeezzzz when will they learn!
That is done to prevent a broken spoke being flung by centrifugal force into the tyre thereby possibly puncturing your inner tube.
