Spanish Pyranees - where to base?

September

We found it really quiet in September and had no problem getting cheap hotels at 4pm wherever we happened to be.
Think the Spanish people are very honest and never had a worry about leaving the bikes on the street.
Enjoy.

Any more suggestions for towns to stay in? The route is pretty easy to plan, just looking for some decent towns / villages!

Jaca is nice - & not far from the N260
We normally stay at a nice little hotel just North of the town, on the road to France

Or there's this very nice one in Toria, only a few miles away

For interesting history, architecture, a tourist office and good cheap hotels.

Try Casacabale in Estaon near Sort. About 30mts away in the mountains. The owner is very friendly lady and will cook for you if you want authentic spanish food. Try estaon.com

Cauterets is a lovely little town, and it's right in the heart of the Pyrenees. You can camp, B&B or hotel there, and the ski lift runs all year so you can go walkies and explore if fancy a change from riding. The larger conurbation of Argeles Gazost is just down the road, but i've only ridden through there so can't comment on what it's like.
Plenty of places to stay listed here.

What is the weather like in north west Spain like in March ?

Having stayed there on this trip I thoroughly recommend Ainsa. Lovely little town. Vielha also lovely and argeles-gazost was nice in the mountains but limited bar wise if that's what you're after

Stayed in Ainsa a few weeks ago for a couple of nights at Hotel Dos Rios.

The old part is really nice. Good restaraunts and a nice pint of Guiness.

Vitoria-Gasteiz is a good stop-over on a weekend.
