1190 Airbox issues

Lumpy vee twin it's just engine burps spitting back pasted the butterfly valves

i think that is quite a real possibility.

mine was similar only with rather less deposits after 1200 odd miles.

So what is really happening is.....the dirt is actually coming out past the butterflies into the velocity stacks rather than being dirt heading in ? That would make sense seeing the airbox is so clean.

Saying that, here's the 2015 modified airbox now fitted to 1190 and presumably 1290 models. You can see how the design of the filter holder is different.

After 5500 miles (all on road), I finally got round to taking off my tank to take a look at the airbox. I was pleasantly surprised, no dirt or water marks in the airbox at all, but I did have exactly the same sooty deposits on the insides of the trumpets as Davy F, although mine were probably not quite as dirty.

Really can't go with the blowback theory, I think you'd hear/feel something like that through the airbox. KTM UK have been contacted and initially don't seem too helpful from what I've been told and I'm getting a call from my dealer principal tomorrow with some news or something. Fingers crossed.

it could well happen when it starts and you wouldn't know - rich mixture. i can't help thinking, if it's in the trumpets but not in the airbox, it must be coming from the engine. could you tell if the residue was gritty or sooty? i couldn't with mine. it was sort of greasy. i thought i might have even greased the trumpets to catch any debris when i was in there before, but i couldn't remember if i had or not :blast

KTM might do a leakdown test, but i'm sure it will come back within parameters. i imagine they'll say it's all hunky dory and carry on as is, though there is talk of retrofitting 2015 airboxes.
bottom line IMO is that you can't trust the 2013/14 OEM filter arrangement. so you either rely on KTM fixing it if it all goes to crap, or do something to prevent it in the first place :nenau

Well, just had a call from my dealer principal (the great Phillip McCallen) and he has been in contact with head office. There doesn't seem to be any reported cases like the States etc and he is convinced there is blow-back coming up through the stacks. With no evidence of any dirt anywhere else within the airbox, I guess it does stand to reason that those big slugs are doing something in this respect. He has assured me that this matter will be noted on my service record so that should any issue in the future crop up, it can be recalled that it was investigated. In all honesty, this wasn't giving me sleepless nights, so I'm happy.

bought a couple of unifilter lid seals as the one i took off my "old" 1190 looked a bit pinched and could use being replaced before i fit one on my new bike.

1 item from Touratech - £11.28 +£7 postage. 10 to 14 days delivery.

2 of the same parts direct from unifilter in Aus - £17.73 and delivered in 6 days.

Perfect timing Cookie, thanks :)

My bike's in for it's 9,000 mile service today but I've asked them to leave the air filter alone as I fitted a DNA and home made silicone gasket. I want to see for myself how effective it's been.

I'll order one of these gaskets for when I go into the air box in the next week or so as it has to be better than my home made attempt (and reusable). I'll report back when done.

On the subject of 'reporting back' when are you gonna let us know about how the R compares to your old vanilla Adv? :beerjug:

Andres

Edit: Ordering direct from Unifilter cost me $27Aus which is £12.60 (inc post) :)

i intend to, but i keep delaying as i've only done 300 miles on it so far and i'm not sure that's enough?

spoiler alert: i think it's quite nice :D

Fair comment so get some miles on her! ;)

FWIW I had a chat with the mechanic when I picked my bike up from it's service earlier about the airbox 'issue'. He was well aware of the reports on dirt ingress but said, hand on heart, he's not seen any evidence of it on any 1050/1190/1290 that he's worked on.

Andres

My mechanic said the same. Twice.

I sneaked the question in again months later when I could see his face. I think he was telling the truth.

My Unifilter 'gasket' arrived today, cheers Cookie.

Arrived quicker (one week from Aus) and cheaper than from TT in the UK :beerjug:

So after 8,000 miles with a DNA oiled filter + filter grease + RTV gasket this is the result.........

and a very dirty (intake side) filter with a collection of flying things the Natural History Museum would be proud of :)

I'm very happy, no dust/debris apparent anywhere in the stacks or box. Would it have been the same with the standard filter, who knows?

When it goes back together after cleaning I'll be using the reusable Unifilter oiled foam gasket I now have.

Andres

PS Oh, and it's MUCH quicker stripping everything down the second time you do it :)

That looks very clean indeed. When I've looked at the insides of my old bike there was some soot(?) in the intakes. Only really noticeable by wiping with a clean paper towel though

I had so many dead insects and crap on the dirty side of mine that I fitted the KTM intake socks.

This was mine after 8k. The actual airbox was pretty clean, but the stacks and butterflies were another story.

These turned up today from Australia :)

Not sure if they are still really needed for the 2015 on 1190's but will fit one when I next have the time and the fuel tank is not nearly full :augie

Still quicker and cheaper to get them from other side of the World than from Touratech in South Wales :blast

Cost me just over £15 for the two including delivery.

Where did you get them from?

Might have to invest in one after warranty expires as I understand KTM UK will try and void warranty if you fit a working air filter, although I suppose you could always pop the original back in before taking it for the dealer service.

Should be able to see if any crap is getting past yours when you go to fit the new filter.

As a 'new to me' 2014 1190 owner, I'd be interested in getting one too:)

This was mine after a weekend green laning in Wales, the bike was serviced on the Friday before the weekend and this pic was taken during the cleaning after the weekend. I'm tempted with the Rottweiler set up
