1190 Airbox issues

This was mine after a weekend green laning in Wales, the bike was serviced on the Friday before the weekend and this pic was taken during the cleaning after the weekend. I'm tempted with the Rottweiler set up

I thought the OEM air filter made a better seal against the 2015 box, so I left it in and just fitted the UNI gasket.

Not sure if they are still really needed for the 2015 on 1190's but will fit one when I next have the time and the fuel tank is not nearly full :augie

I'm not either as I'm not sure what the differences in the airboxes are but, FWIW, I'm convinced the issue on the 2014's (which is what mine is) is the seal between the OEM filter and the airbox clamp that locates it. The sealing of the airbox lid looks ok to me and I only used RTV and now the Unifilter gasket as a 'belt and braces'.

The OEM filter is a looser fit than the DNA filter and also not as rigid as the DNA - I wonder if it flexes under hard acceleration especially when heated up and the airbox/filter moulding softens?

The DNA has a very small contact area, and is hard plastic so does not deform easily to mate to the wonky plastic clamp/box. Seemed OK in the 14 but I was not happy with the seal in the 15. Trouble is, it's virtually impossible to tell. The OEM filter is softer and definitely does squish up in the 15 clamp. I think. I hope so anyway.
The UNI is somewhere between the two. I definitely prefer the seal of the UNI to the DNA.

With both 14 and 15, the filter is sucked away from the box and onto the clamp, which doesn't seal to the box. Fundamental balls up really.

I also think that the lid seals ok when new, but then possibly warps when it gets hot later in life. You might check the box with 1K on the clock and it's fine, but what about after you ragged it across Spain?

Then there's the issue of the o rings between the air box and the throttle bodies not being fitted correctly, or at all.

I don’t recall the plastic being hard but yeah, it’s less ‘squishy’ than the OEM. The main improvement seemed to me to be the increase in overall rigidity, partly due to the filter material/construction and partly due to the less ‘squishy’ plastic.

That’s a fair point, but, my lid was last off at 8,000 miles (see my post with piccies above) after I’d ragged it across Spain and still looked good to me :D

I’d not heard of/thought of that as an issue. I’ve now gone from being reasonably happy with my airbox sealing to flipping worried again – thanks Cookie ;)

Iam running a standard filter with a uni gasket and have not had any excess dust in my stacks yet but i did notice the airbox slightly warped the last time i checked filter.

The clamp is the only difference between the boxes.

The warping should not be a problem if you seal the lid with rtv as you did, or UNI gasket.

I wouldn't worry about the o rings. If they were going to be an issue you'd know when you checked for cleanliness, which you've already done.

BTW I see over on advrider there have been a few cases where the much touted pod filters have split their rubber mounts and leaked there.
 
I am hoping the 2015 is much better, my understanding is there were two problems, the lid not always sealing and the filter getting pulled away at the bottom edge when the engine running.

Found a YouTube video showing the second problem, the guy could easily move the bottom of the filter back towards the clean side which opens up a gap at the bottom dirt can bypass, I believe this is supposedly solved with the 2015 - but seen other people claiming event the 2015 airbox / filter combo does not seal at the bottom 100%, but it may be...

...the top still leaks.

Sort of sucks that KTM cannot fix it, Uni-Filter obviously came up with a good fix and I cannot see why they cannot copy this and come up with a filter that seals all the way around and a gasket for the top of the airbox that solves the second problem.

My fear is for bikes ridden mainly on the road by the time the engine is buggered the warranty period is up.

I think it is only a matter of time until KTM find themselves in a court room under such circumstances and / or receiving terribly bad press unless they man-up and do goodwill fixes a-la BMW for poor sods who end up with a shot engine.
 
main point i noticed - Mototard1 apparently fucked his motor with 3000 miles of ROAD riding.

TBH I'm not worried about my bike at all now and it's a long term keeper as far as I'm concerned (unless they bring out a full power 1290R :D). I seem to have a clean airbox with the mods I've made so am happy with that (I've tempted fate now haven't I :D).

I'm still not convinced by the leaking lid thing and am inclined to think that 'Chinese Whispers' have extrapolated the well known issue of warped lids/boxes on the 690's onto the 1050/1190/1290's :nenau

there are several reports of dirt ingression from road only use though in other threads.

Dont worry about it as you live in the UK and it rains every day . This helps keep the dust down. :thumb2
