Will be heading to USA in June 2015 for trip taking in Utah,Colorado,Wyoming and Montana. Would also like to venture over the border to Banff , Canada. I will probably be renting a GS from somebody like Eaglerider , but am just wondering about insurance.Does the Eaglerider cost of $160.00 per day cover insurance too ? Also , what are the insurance implications for leaving the U.S. with a bike rented in the U.S. ?

Your best bet is to ask them directly. Some rental companies (not sure about Eaglerider) don't allow you to take the bike out of the US so it would be best to check with them on that one as well.

On my trips, where we ship our own bikes out, we have to take out specialist road cover for UK bikes which includes both US and Canadian coverage.

Just a tip, insurance is quite pricey out there but take out the best coverage you can afford. There are a lot of uninsured drivers running around out there especially in the sticks. On your personal travel insurance, make sure it states you can ride a bike over 125cc and it includes Medivac and repatriation as you will be a long way from anywhere if something happens.

FYI, there is a law (or maybe 'insurance company regulation' would be a better term) here in North America that states that any automotive insurance policy issued by any Canadian or American insurer must be valid in all 50 American states and all the Canadian provinces and territories, and must meet the minimum legislated requirements for third party cover in both Canada and the USA.

Hence, if nothing else, you can be assured that if you buy a policy, it will be valid everywhere.

Note that the law/regulation specifically addresses 3rd party liability, it does not address any additional coverage such as fire, theft, collision, and so forth.

Would be very interesting to get any feedback from Bitish/Irish frequent travellers in the U.S. regarding reputable (maybe specialist) insurance companies who would be up to speed with the requirements/insurance obligations for a rider from abroad. I have three possible choices 1. Rental - Eaglerider or other. 2. A U.S. Friend has offered me his cb1000 for the trip. 3. Ship my bike.
Option 3 is the least likely as I am just doing a 14 day trip and so , I expect the cost to be prohibitive. Has anyone come across option 2 ? The loaner would be owned by and insured by a U.S. citizen. Would it be possible to insure a rider from Ireland on this bike ? I know it ain't a GS but 14 days at $160.00 per day = a bunny of reduced cheeriness !!!

As far as I'm aware, it's the vehicle which is insured so if your friend has his CB100 insured, you should be OK but you are better off checking with him and his insurance company. That would be your cheapest option even if you have to pay a supplement to ride it.

Specialist insurance companies are www.fernet.com or www.motorcycleexpress.com who I use on my trips. They cater for foreign bikes in the US but you need to perhaps contact them to see what they can do.

Shipping your own is brilliant and generally, it pays for a 3 week trip or longer depending on where you ship in and out from. It's probably not worth it for 2 weeks but double check your total cost for rental including their insurance as often they will sting you for extra cover when you get there.
