We are negotiating a deal with a UK bike dealer for a number of hire bikes to be placed at our hotel for the summer. Ideally they would be UK registered and arrive at the start of the season and return at the end. This would fit in with the six month limit which applies to vehicles on non Austrian plates remaining in Austria. The insurance seems to be an issue. Does anyone know of a company who provide cover in these circumstances? There appear to be several people offering fly/hire deals from the UK so someone must b able to help. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Would it not be easier and less complicated logistically to get hire bikes from an Austrian dealer

Why not try contact the Enzien Motorrad biker hotel in Landeck, they specialise in renting bikes and looking after bikers, it's well known and well liked, I have stayed there, you could probably strike a deal with the owner Klaus. Check it out at....

You get some great complementary routes, breakfast runs etc, but the best bit might be that you are within very easy reach of the Stelvio, which just has to be ridden. :thumb2

I love the irony! We run our own biker hotel independently. We are nowhere near either Landeck or the Stelvio. As you say the Stelvio has to be ridden-once. There are many roads in our region you will want to ride again and again. We have 65 plus day routes from our place including many into both Slovenia and Italy. See Gasthof Hochalmspitze for more details

John just further to add my cousin lived in Stuttgart for a number of years and has a place in the Tyrol and tried just about every uk insurer over the years to try and get cover to take his k1100 over there for 6 months of the year and none of the usual suspects would entertain the idea.
I take it that the UK hirer can't help with their insurer

ps the German companies wouldn't insure a UK registered bike

Sadly no. Our experience is that dealing with Austrian companies is not easy, they often do not understand our timescales. For instance the idea of booking a hire bike now for next July is alien to most Austrians. They also seem to have little regard to the concept of honoring a contract, we have no faith that bikes ordered months ahead would actually be available as requested.

Hiring bikes in Austria is problematic because of the insurance situation. Most Austrian bikers only have third party cover because fully comp is so expensive. Hire bikes here don't usually come with fully comp so the person hiring has to risk a large payment in the event of damage. For those wishing to fly in and hire we normally suggest flying into Munich where the situation is easier and there is wide choice of hire companies.

Our concept is for small groups of riders from the UK to fly in for a weeks riding. Having the bikes sourced from the UK and the hire organised by a UK dealer means that bookings can be made in confidence. The UK dealer will provide the bikes, those bikes will remain at our place all season so will always be available. This would not be possible if we tried to hire them locally.

FOT.AT do fully comp covered bike hire and use BMW bikes from Kauffmann BMW in Kaprun we have had bikes from them on three occasions

So far the UK dealer has drawn a blank, hence the question. And on the subject of a single bike at least Austrian insurance has none of this nonesense about limiting the time allowed out of the country. It covers us for Europe.

Hi John.

Not sure if this guy will be amenable to help but you can give him a try

A mate from California stores a US registered GS in Stefan's store and comes over each summer to ride it around Europe. Stefan arranges insurance through a company based in Luxembourg. The mate is going to rummage through his documents to see if he can identify the broker just in case Stefan wants to hold his cards close to his chest.

I can't imagine Klaus wanting to do a deal with any one, let alone a competitor!!

Having been to both, I would never go back to Landeck!

I would cheerfully go and see John again!
