Hello all,

After 40k miles, my GS has started to feel decidedly wallowy and the bumps are bumpier. I need new shocks.

Can anyone recommend a place to get some fitted and set up around Bristol/Bath/Glaaaaawster way?

Much obliged.

I can recommend JHS Racing, Bristol http://www.jhsracing.co.uk/

They fitted Ohlins shocks and set-up on my Diavel recently. great job and reasonable price.

And i can also recommend Revs Racing nr Birmingham http://www.revsracing.co.uk/ , who specialize in Wilbers shocks for the GS's (they did my GSA).

Thanks for replies. Had a chat with people from Revs, seem a decent bunch. Advantage is it's done while you wait and I get to see if there's anything to this talk of Wilber's being better. As my bike is a daily commuter 1 day turnaround has significant advantages.

Or is it all smoke and mirrors, maybe the stock ones would be perfectly OK when rebuilt.

Decisions, decisions....

Changing the OEM shocks on a telelever equipped BMW is the best modification you can make to the bike. If you think the bike handles well on OEM shocks you'll be blown away by Wilbers, Ohlins, Nitron etc.

The blokes at Revs are top notch - really know their stuff and are very friendly. They'll be rebuilding my Ohlins at some point in the not too distant future.

Good luck finding the place though:augie:thumby:

not going to start a pissing contest here...but had mine rebuilt and re valved by MCT suspension. Very good value for money, massive difference in the ride. Bike now holds a line a lot better. Then againb, m ight be my shit riding ability! Anyhow, a very noticeabke difference. Cost about £150 including all postage to and from. Very happy and most noticeable on rides. Was going to do the expensive Ohlins cum other upgrade but amhappy with my choice.

Another vote for Revs, they did a Wilbers for me on me old Tiger and we had Tea an Biccies on the Patio:D

Tricky isn't it? I'm sure that when you get your Wilber's or Ohlin's fitted it is a massive improvement, but is that because they're loads better, or cos your old shocks were shot?

I'm not trying to say people are mistaken, just that it's difficult to compare.

Ohlins on my 1150 where loads better, a massive diffrence ( and the old shocks where still good)

Yep same here - I replaced my original shocks because I wanted an improvement not because they were worn out. Replaced at well under 10,000 miles with Ohlins. OEM's were bottoming out on big jumps and bumps - Ohlins transformed the bike. Your choice - good luck:)

Not sure which model GS you have, but have you thought about Nitron? They are built to your specification. I've got one on my F800GS and it's made a difference, and it was only at 24k miles (yes I do have a vested interest as I am part of Rugged Roads).

Here's a picture, and all the relevant blurb

If you're interested in talking about them with someone, drop me a PM with your number and I'll get Jonathan, our resident expert, to give you a ring.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm going to give Revs and Wilbers a go. Looking forward to seeing how the bike handles.

Well I put Maxton shocks on my r1200gsa when it had 3,000 miles on the clock and was 12 weeks old (the rear shock had actually only covered 200 miles as it was a warranty replacement), trust me in my case the aftermarket was much much better as the standard stuff was crap.

Back from Revs, and had a couple of rides to and from work. Excellent friendly service from the boys there as others have described.

First thing I noticed is how much stiffer the bike is, which probably reflects how shot my old shocks were as much as how much better the new ones are.

On a ride back through Evesham, Stow and Cirencester I got a bit of a feel for things, and it does feel very solid on bends now, and it almost snaps onto a new line if you make any changes in a turn, IYKWIM. Good fun. Commuting over the last couple of days in rain and wind has been fine with positive handling throughout.

I'm no speed merchant, and I'm sure these outstrip my ability, but looking forward to drier roads and sunny days to come.

I got wilbers fitted last week! To my 2010 gs! Only has 12k on clock! Back shock was shot! Leaked out most of the oil one night in the shed! 😡! made the choice of getting the wilbers! Made a huge difference to the bike! Haven't covered huge millage since getting them fitted put the change is very noticeable

Wilbers do a lot of bikes with perfectly serviceable OEM shocks for people who want the better ride and handling.
Stiffness is down to how strong a spring they fit. I'm happy with my standard spring rate so would probably keep it similar. But they offer a custom service for people who want to match spring rates to their weight and carrying needs.
