I've got some old Musto t-shirts that I've had for years but are looking past their best.
Can anyone recommend a good quality wicking t-shirt to wear under leather or goretex jacket for hot temps ?

Ideally I'd like something that doesn't look too obviously a specialist mcycle shirt so it looks ok when not riding as well.

I've done a search but can't seem to find much apart from EDZ offerings.

There's lots of kit out there. Quite possibly the best is Patagonia Capilene in all its weights. For hot climates, look at the silk weight stuff. It also has the benefit of being shiny so it should be easy to slip a jacket on and off.

I used a force field under shirt in Bolivia and Cambodia really good and didn't get too smelly ! Lynx helped !! Its a close fit but wick away it did .

Another vote for light weight Merino, Icebreaker do some good ones with perforated side panels which I've used for a few years now. They work great in heat and layered up are really good for the cold as well.

I've also recently bought some stuff from BAM Linky. It's made from bamboo fibres and is stretchyer (is there such a word?) than merino but has the same wicking and anti bacterial qualities (i.e. it won't pong when worn for a few days) and seems to be just as cool, if anything better because the material is smoother and very comfy to wear. So far I'm very pleased with it :)

Although supposedly not as good as merino, I have a couple of performance T-shirts from Granite (like here) that are extremely soft and comfortable, which don't seem to smell after multiple wearings, and which are pretty cheap too.

I also have a couple of merino wool base layers from Mountain Warehouse (like here) that are very good, though you probably want short sleeves. Other wicking and base layer options here.

But, because you can't ever have enough technical clothing, I'm off to buy something from Outtomunch's BAM link! :thumb2

Bugger, me too now.

It's worth noting that their sizing on tops seems to be a size too big. I always take large but had to send them back and exchange for medium which fit perfectly, the same as a large normaly would. I also ordered some boxers and the opposite was true; I ended up with a size bigger than I normally take.

Great advice guys,ta.

I'm also going to have a look in the huge North Face store in Chicago when I'm there in a few days as they seem to do a few and will be cheaper over there.

Look at my name and guess what the M stands for.

Good to hear the product served you well!

Fast drys are designed to dry quickly when they get wet, especially on a boat when there's plenty of water about. To work properly they are best exposed to the air and are not perfect as a base layer under a suit. Get smelly quite quickly as well.

Personally I wear Merino. get a 140 gram weight for the warmer weather and then a 200/220 weight for the colder days. They keep you warm, dry and have the bonus of not smelling when you have worn them for a week on tour.

Icebreaker do the best selection of garments and their quality is excellent.

Good luck.

If you happen to be in NYC, there's a good Patagonia store on Columbus Ave, opposite the Museum of Natural History. I got some nice lightweight long johns in there at a very good discounted price. I've got drawers full of base layers including Merino wool and several outdoor brands but nothing wicks as well as Capilene as tested by me in Death Valley. :)

In really hote weather I think even 150gm merino is too warm.

Try The North Face Reaxion - comes in short and long sleeves...

Alternatively, Helly Hansen Cool stuff works well...

Used Helly Hanson in my earlier years for high sweating activities - moutaineering, cycling skiing. Extremely good at wicking away sweat and kept the garment dry next to your skin. Bad part was it PONGED after only a few minutes. Come to think of it maybe that's why I did most of the Munros and Corbetts on my own and the deer kept coming up close......

Moved over to merino.
2011. Icebreaker 150gm T shirt and a 200gm half zip long sleeved. Used for about four years. T shirt was great in warm/hot weather could wear for a week doing large amount of sweating and no pong. Didn't wick as well as the Helly but still far far better than a cotton T shirt. The long sleeved half zip was a 'body fit'. Comfortable enough but really designed for those half whippet fell runners. Not a pretty sight to be parading about with my mamboobs being aired in public. Definitely cover up at all times. However, after 3 yrs, holes started to appear under the arms - just wearing thin very quickly. So £50 for a T and £75 for a half zip that you can wear for weeks at a time between washes is probably okay. BTW, always hand washed too. Especially 'on tour' as you don't need to take many clothes.

2013. Then discovered Rohan. Much, much softer and longer lasting, thuogh they are a bit thicker. Nice 'generous' manly fit. Mamboobs not so obvious. I take a L in Rohan and an XL in Icebreaker for a 46" chest. T shirts and half zips are similar price to Icebreaker but they are definitely lasting much better and not fading like the Icebreaker T and keeping their shape just as well. Rohan often have 'end of season' sales. 30% - 50% off making garment not a 'bargain' but more affordable.
Extensive website and good mail order service. Remember sizes are quite generous but worth a look.

No connection with company but have bought a number of other items and very impressed with the overall quality and clever design features.

Should be sorted !
Just been for brek at a new place and happened upon this street just 5 mins from my hotel.

So both Icebreaker and Patagonia within 20 metres of each other and less than half a mile away is a huge North Face store.

Going back shortly when they open

That's pretty much British prices. The last Icebreaker stuff I bought was in their store in Portland Oregon. It was on sale at $16 each for a long sleeved top when we were getting $2 to the pound. I guess that was 7 years ago, though.....:eek
