Today I have been mostly exploring byways

Just been checking Explorer 158 - there seems to be a right mess of them - if the weather stays dry I may venture out that way on Sunday.

Just in case I have to do the Easter Bunny thing tomorrow, decided to spend a few hours exploring today :)

An interesting one - several different surfaces - a bit muddy in places.

BW054-BW056 was resurfaced a few years ago with large gravel.

BW054 is N51 26.299 W1 18.584
BW056 is N51 26.891 W1 18.774

BW095-BW096 was fairly long - the byway splits both ways just after BW095 - I took the right fork, a good surface today but probably too tricky on Tourances after rain.

BW095 is N51 26.425 W1 17.998
BW096 is N51 25.979 W1 17.235

BW055 started well - according to my Explorer 158 map it was supposed to take a loop into a wooded area just before the M4, however on reaching the edge of the M4 I discovered it was now a bridleway.

BW055 is N51 26.937 W1 18.925

Some of the numerous ones around Bucklebury

BW075 is N51 27.165 W1 14.314
BW076 is N51 26.674 W1 14.056

BW072 is N51 26.862 W1 15.083
BW073 is N51 27.015 W1 15.067

BW098 is N51 26.853 W1 15.214
BW097 is N51 26.294 W1 15.214 and forms an intersection with an interesting looking RUPP (closed to traffic until 31st May)
BW071 is N51 26.153 W1 15.392

BW101 to BW100 is two short byways - BW101 is my favourite ford, BW099 has a very muddy exit (no Photos) so had to take in a few crossings of the Bucklebury double-ford to wash the bike down a bit ;)

BW101 is N51 26.291 W1 13.203
BW099 is N51 26.198 W1 13.312
BW100 is N51 26.081 W1 13.398

Monday 28th March 2005

Back exploring the mess of byways around Upper Bucklebury. Partially successful, in that I took accurate "Marks" of Byway positions but not too successful in navigating many of them - got a bit stuck twice - too muddy mainly - so roll on TKC80s and a couple of companions to help drag me out of the mud holes :)

Decided to post the whole "track" - some of which is not actually byway - a comparison with Explorer 158 should give you a better idea.

Anyone local fancy a revisit somewhen ?

Nearly got to the end of this one - a muddy hill...

Then I reached this :yikes

The trench on each side is getting on for two feet deep - I could see about 50 yards down the hill and it didn't look much better.

I finally found the other end - if ever I try again I don't think I'll be going up hill from this direction.

Been following your exploring with interest Clive, I'd be interested in comin along sometime, also will be looking for clearence from Mrs Patch to orgnise a jaunt around some Hants byways during April

After getting stuck for about 15 minutes attempting a hill climb just down the road from the last photo, I decided my Tourances don't really work in mud  - so gave up on the next one when I got to this

I shall be watching out for your jaunt - try to avoid the Lands End weekend ;)

I'm fairly sure I could string together several of the byways and a couple of fords into an interesting few hours ride - probably best done after a dry spell though
:D

When I sort something out I'll post details in the South East section.

I get my TKC80s fitted on Friday so for a "comparison" I've strung together some of the more interesting byways (with a couple of fords thrown in for good measure, of course ;) into a route that runs from the A329M East of Wokingham to Chieveley Services (J13 of M4). The first available date I have for this is probably Saturday morning 9th April, although there is a chance I'll have a couple of hours spare this Sunday afternoon :D

Interested ?
