Didn't want to do the shopping thing so I whipped out my Explorer 159, loaded the GPS with several start/end Byway waypoints and ventured out into deepest Berkshire...

The route of an old roman road looked a promising start

However it looked like the 4x4s had been out in the wet and had completely ripped up the track - I walked a few hundred yards of it but there was no way I was going any further on my own on Tourances.

Later discovered I'd managed to get around 2/3s of the track.

BW013 is N51 21.499 W1 02.606
BW014 is N51 21.584 W1 00.467

I found the other end of the track (BW013) but wasn't able to get far before I hit similar ripped up track - approx 300 yards in :(

This byway had a bit of a tricky bend in it full of soft mud and water - this was followed by a load of dumped large gas cylinders (not really easy to get to - why here  ) - and a steepish hill (depth totally lost in the photo)

A few yards from the end of the last one is the start of this one

BW010 is N51 22.414 W1 05.459

Not very interesting - the first half is tarmac with small speed bumps and the second half is potholed gravel/mud.

BW005 is N51 21.490 W1 07.720
BW006 is N51 21.917 W1 07.732

Started out promising - fresh deep gravel leading over a small bridge/stream - surface shortly got much better and ended up by a fishing lake and industrial estate (didn't bother going back for a photo of the bridge :)

Lots of rubbish about - 1/2 way down it there was a run down farm and dozens of chickens running loose - other than that not really worth a second visit - comes out next to a housing estate.

The first part leads past a load of houses who obviously can't afford to fix the potholded surface ;)

The second part is a reasonable surface - but overall is a bit short.

This is the exit at BW002.

Nice one Clive.......you're still one of the very few who use their 12gs as it's supposed to be used ;) :thumb

If you're at Land's End, I've got a nice little fords ride planned for us.....and I promise not to drown you this time ;) :D

I'm planning to be there and looking forward to the fords ride.

I'm also planning to find a spare Sunday afternoon between now and then to make up a snorkel :p

Clive, not been there yet but North of Thatcham looks promising,
I was hoping to use a mates 4x4 to check out ones near me, but seems you have done most of them for me.

Cos the local pikeys left them there - be careful exploring any tracks near the water tower in Burghfield Common!

Or anywhere in Burghfield really, used to muntain bike over the common going over to Mortimer and lots of fly tipping and dumped cars, amazing some of the stuff that was dumped.

Amazing, people say the pikeys are lazy, but the amount of crap they have left in this area means that some of them must be working hard at it. It's not as if there are that many of them either.

The local landowners, and in particular Englefied Estate, must be cheesed of with it. The more barriers they build, the more inventive the pikeys get - like a sort of arms race!

Sorry to hijack your thread Clive! By the way you missed out a vital waypoint on the mad with Mortimer West End on it - the Red Lion pub, source of good food, and for those interested in it, good beer as well. Allegedly.
