Did my IAM yesterday and passed OK. Chatting to the examiner afterwards (Police bike cop as many IAM examiners are) I wondered about the number of hours invested to bring bike cops up to the highest standard. Police Class 1 would that be?

Anyway. I wonder if one of our Polis readers would itemise the courses they have done and the number of hours involved?

Er no. Before anyone draws any false conclusions. We chatted about the current situation re public spending cuts and the likely impact on the Police / road safety. My assumption is that a fair chunk of public cash is currently spent to bring a driver up to the highest standard. Rightly so. I'd just like some detail on what actually happens in terms of courses / hours to bring someone up to that standard. One of the lads at the recent Blackloonies event itemised what he had done but it was not the time or place to get paper and pencil out!:beerjug:

In The Met I believe the standard response course is 2 weeks and 2 days, the advanced course is a week. Most traffic officers etc. do the standard course with the advanced generally only for the Special Escort Group & surveillance riders.

I'm impressed, you can remember a conversation from a Blackloonies do. That may be a first :D

Course

It was a 4 week course with a weeks refresher every 2 years.......

it may have changed since then.

Hmm...

3 week basic course to drive 'panda cars'....up to 1600cc, then, after 2 years probation, 3 week intermediate course to drive 'area cars' and transits, then, after doing traffic aide, 4 week advanced course to drive anything, week refresher every 2 years, then, if you wanted, 3 week heavyweight m/c course to drive traffic bikes, week refresher every 2 years....the weeks advanced m/c refresher was probably the best fun I've ever had on a bike..... You came out with Class 1 or 2 for traffic cars, Class 6 or 7 for bikes. ! was pleased to get....and keep, Class 1 and 6.

That was 1977 and on. I imagine its' a lot less than that nowadays. The costs must be ferocious! Good fun though....

All these courses were full time and residential....staying at HQ's.....where they still had cadets....female ones...:D

Well done by the way.....:thumby:

Kent have recently upgraded there course to include extra training when selecting fuel for the vehicle due to a unfortunate incident :augie

Talk about kick a man to death over one silly mistake !

keep up the good work :D

I am ex fire service so I know that his colleagues will probably mention it from time to time :comfort as any mistakes I made in my job were a constant source of amusement never to be forgotten :blast

mine was a three week course, but it was a while ago.

My advanced courses were usually one month long, and the learning curve was gradual but demanding. Standards were unbelievably high and nothing less than first rate was accepted. If you got your ticket at the end then you could be proud. I really enjoyed being at that level, but I'm four years out of the job now and I'm very aware that I simply am not that good anymore, much as I try.

3 years out for me...17 years on bikes and cars...but you do soon lose the edge .. I suppose it's because you'ree no longer out in all weathers with colleagues responding to incidents miles away :thumb2
