A few of us are heading to the Vosges.
The first couple of nights in the Northern Vosges (wasselonne/Bitche/Haguenau?), the next 3 nights further south possibly Colmar.

Any recommendations for, suggested routes etc gratefully received :)

Phil

Just get the 1:200000 Michelin map for Alsace - as you are there for 5 days or so, you will be able to do most of the roads as it is a fairly small area. The Route des Cretes from Cernay to Ste Marie aux Mines is a great road but only about 89km long https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_des_Cretes

Quite a bit of WW1 history around Munster if that floats your boat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I_Memorials_and_Cemeteries_in_Alsace

Watch out for gravillons. I was there in June and there is a lot of resurfacing going on with granite chips. Those roads will be settled now but other parts may have been done recently.

This hotel above Munster is excellent - go half board as it is quite isolated. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_...taurant_Panorama-Hohrod_Haut_Rhin_Alsace.html

Thankyou for the input, a friend has the ride mag with Vosges routes (and wants to stick to their 'suggested' routes) but they ain't always the best ;)
I'll check out the links although knowing my luck, it'll piss it down all week - it usully does!

I was there about 10 days ago - whole length of Route des Cretes, road surface was fine as the chippings have settled now :)

I toured the Vosges area about six or seven years ago with a couple of friends - whilst I can't remember the routes we took I do recall that if we were near the border of an evening we always crossed over into Germany as the hotels and restaurants were about two thirds the cost of the French side. I hadn't toured Germany at that time, but we ended up enjoying that side of the border so much that the following year we spent a couple of weeks doing Germany with side trips into Austria and Switzerland

Always a possibility so be flexible - if the weather is horrible in Alsace, cross the Rhine into the Black Forest as the weather may be better

Another good place to use as a base is Kaysersberg - a number of hotels in the town. Hotel Constantin is okay and has a garage for bikes. Rooms are small though.

This year we had semi rigid plans and for some nights would look at weather in the morning and then decide where we would ride to and book something online before leaving the hotel.

With a puncture incident on a Saturday and France being closed Sunday - Monday for bike shops and the RAC not being that helpful booking.com became my new fave website.

The most southern point we stayed at was Belfort - Best Western, very modern and secure parking behind a key coded gate and in a garage. Was about €69 with free wifi and breakfast ;)

Then take a map too; between you and your friends, you'll work it out.

PS If you trust ADAC's suggested routes better over Ride magazine's, look at:

Want a paper copy, too:

Want to make your own paper copy for free or load the PDF to a mobile device?

Got a day or two before you go and the patience to wait? Order yourself this book:

It's in 'foreign' but hey, so are the Vosges and a map / route cards are the same the whole world over.

Want something built by bikers for bikers? Look at:

Want biker friendly accommodations? Easy. Google 'biker friendly hotels vosges'

Its not exactly hard to find decent roads in the Vosges - take a look at the map, the bendy ones are generally the most fun.

Any direction from Schlucht will be fun, though my personal favorite is Ballon d'Alsace, up one side and down the other. Nice cafe at the top (tarte myrtilles would be my recommendation). We go for breakfast there weekly.

You can grow to hate some people...

Settled on anything, Phil-H?
Not had chance for following up on the links & browsing suggested routes against a proper map as yet but thanks for all of the suggestions & pm's - it is appreciated :)

We've booked a hotel in Wissembourg - 55euro pp for two nights inc breakfast which sounds good enough

Now to sort somewhere further south, Colmar looks nice for a few days!

Cheers, Phil
