Need off road tuition

If you want to do some easy trails - would be happy to lead you around some easy trails in the North Cotswolds. I've done them 2up on the GSA... on the wrong tyres, so they're very accessible lanes. Have taken plenty of complete beginners around :thumb2

Failing that - money with a school, using their bikes is hugely beneficial, mostly because you're not afraid of dropping the bike. Have done many course with BMW, highly recommend them. ABW - SkyGod, he's a top chap, despite what everyone says about him :p and he is in great part of the country.

All of the above.

I wouldn't dare to go anywhere near them at the moment. .

And there's your problem. Your so Shit scared of falling off you will be so rigid it will feel horrible.

Gaz (skygod) will look after you, get your ass on one of his days on his bikes and you will come out the other side a much better rider off road.

WOW, what a wonderful response, all of you. I am amazed at the friendliness show. Thanks all.

Mav, where is N. Cotswolds in your language? Banbury way? If so you are about 2 hours from me, so not too bad at all - bakewell is about an hour for Skygod. Now I am torn between going to him first, or Mav first to get an idea if I will ever manage it. I can't do anything now until December - working in Southampton next weekend, then Dover the weekend after. Might have to wait until first week December. Time to make some enquiries and decisions.

Thanks ever so much guys.

As Mr Hall says - Winchcombe way, about 10 miles North of Cheltenham. If you fancy popping down in Dec for an hour or two in the morning, just let me know :thumb2

Mav rides around winchcombe.... If I'm free il join you.

Would be great to see you chap - it's been too long! Also, heading to the bike show on the 30th - you planning on going this year?

Thank you very much. Cheltenham is ok for a day and back.

I shall be there on Press Day, mostly around Custom Extreme - and then walkabout to see all the new launches. Gone are the days of the dolly birds and booze though.

GSA off road/Green lanes

I have read through this thread as I am looking to get some off-road experience under my belt but not quite sure how to get about it.
First of all I have to say, what a great group of people in this forum: lots of replies and advice from all corners.

Second, having recently spoiled myself to a WC GSA, I am thinking it would be a shame just to ride on-road and eventually I would like to do some green lanes. I have done a day off-roading some 2 yrs back, but on a 250cc machine, thus bit of a difference.

How would I go on about it:

a) tyres: can I change them myself and put knobbly ones on myself? How much of a DIY job would that be?
b) is it alright to ride knobbly tyres on the road to the green lanes; not legally speaking but more whether ( would not make much sense to me to transport an extra set with me)
c) I live SE London: where to go for a bit of green lanes?
d) am I a fool of thinking of taking the GSA off-roading ?? :)

Hi Caesi,
Yes, it is a shame to only ride on tarmac, and yes it can be great fun venturing off the smooth black stuff, but it's not without its pitfalls.
As to your questions,
a) Yes, you can change them yourself. Plenty people do, myself included. If you haven't done it before though a GS is not the best to start on! Get your local tyre shop to do it for you.
b) There are plenty of threads on here about which knobbly tyres are the best, most of them are perfectly road legal, many riders use them all the time. (and your bike looks rufty tufty with them on!)
c) Sorry, can't help with that one. Try your local TRF group, or hope that someone from near you reads this!
d) No, not at all. Just start with easy stuff, go with a mate, and preferably someone who knows the lanes you intend to try.
Good luck
Mark

Or
a) Get Giles to do it he's an expert and near you.

b) Get Giles to change them in the middle of nowhere

c) France

d) Noooo ..... :green gri

:D

Actually you cocky git I am an expert now! Haven't been to Watling tyres in over 18 months :dabone (although I did feck my rims to start with!)

Caesi, Tkc's on yer bike will be fine and your GSA is surprisingly good off road.

But, if you have no off road experience I can only echo what Earthmover says and stick to really easy stuff;

NB, This photo was taken before I had any interest in photography.

They are now much better .... :D

I emailed adventurebikewarehouse because of the mentions in this thread (info@adventurebikewarehouse who do training in the Peak District area) to ask about training as couldnt see any dates on their website. Also, I quite like the idea of getting a CR250L as a novice wannabee trail rider, and as they use those its a good opportunity to try them and see what I think as a 'soft roader'.

Apparently they prefer booking for Wednesdays in December, so just seeing if they can do the 9th as I have a week off that week.

Im sure many will scoff at the CR250L and I know its not a true off-road bike, but my lack of experience means I want something light, that I can ride to and from the local trails, and whilst I have 20+ years experience on the road, I know from a 1 day Honda off road course that counted for exactly squat (other than knowing how to change gears :toungincheek). Also the CRFL's look quite cheap (£4K new).

RBW.

RBW.
