Need off road tuition

.... neither can I afford to drop my bike. So whilst I love looking t the pictures of people doing unbelievable things with their bikes, atking them to incredible places, I get butterflies in my stomach when I think about doing it myself. hence the neeed for some pretty patient coaxing. Are Tourances OK for going on these traisl in North Wales? Or have I got to have real, proper off road tyres?
I understand the horror of dropping your bike, but what is it that you fear most? Potentially expensive damage to the bike? Or that you won't be able to pick it up? If it's the potential damage, just bear in mind that your 1150 was built for the job and a drop at slowish speed off-road (and by that I really mean a loose or soft surface, i.e. not tarmac or concrete) is likely, at worst, to result in only minor cosmetic damage. Believe me, I'm speaking as someone who dropped their own 1150 at least half a dozen times on unsurfaced Russian roads and had it tipped over in a crate while being trucked across Siberia. OK, it wasn't the most pristine 1150 to start with, but it suffered no obvious ill effects. Those bikes are built like tanks ... Which, of course, brings me to the second point, picking it up after a drop. TBH, although I know the theory and have successfully picked up bikes of varying sizes on the BMW course, there's a big difference between picking up an unladen bike on a flat surface and picking up an 1150 fully laden with metal luggage, spare tyres and camping equipment, when it's pointing downhill towards the camber of the road. Frankly, I'm fairly sure most here would be looking for a bit of help. There's no shame in it.

If you aren't planning to do any more than a bit of trail riding (or riding on unsurfaced roads abroad), a day's tuition and a bit of practice is probably all you really need. I would try to look at the price as part of the overall cost of an enjoyable holiday.

Re the tyres, I'm no expert but I wouldn't use the Tourances on anything but tarmac. I'm sure others do, but part of your lack of confidence on the wet grass will have been caused by a lack of grip. Dual-purpose tyres like Karoos or Heidenaus (which I have, but there are many others) will immediately feel much safer - without necessarily having to go for the full-on knobblies, which aren't so great on tarmac.

P.S. I obviously know nothing about 'trail riding' if the picture above is anything to go by.

I'm beginning to wonder if I have bitten off more than I can chew. A face to face natter with someone over a beer is in order I think. Even those gravel roads in Faores filled me with dread and I was all over the place on them. Thankfully nothing coming the other way, because they would have found their way blocked by me stopped with both feet down ! Once I got up the hill it was flatter and I got back on rough tarmac. This is as far off road as I have been other than th gravel car park, which was fairly soft. I think the lack of confidence of being on my own didn't help, happy to go on my own, but aware that if dropped it I would be stuffed.

When it drys up a bit, if it suits yer come up to Matlock way and I will meet yer and give you advice and confidence training - on a couple of easy lanes. It is mostly in yer head but at the price of bikes and their bits yer dont want to be pickin it up.

Super - I am still riding now though. I ride right through the winter, on the road. One reason I can't afford to drop it - I need it for transport! I can only get the car odd days for the charity work to take the kayaks and gear.

Plenty of easy lanes just outside Matlock and a few that might stretch you within an easy distance on the road - ;)

Still £200 for a day but I can recommend Mick Extance in North Wales.

Aye, that was the easy bit, it got worse:blast

Mind you some people make it harder, by not taking a good line:D

Approaching that gate, the best line from memory is across to the right(on your pic) on the narrow stone ledge ;);)

Got the OK to go on the Adventure Bike Rider course in the Peak District - I am booked in for Wednesday thanks to someone on here whose name I forget, but they are booked on and I have made up the numbers. I hope my next post won't be telling of destruction and painful encounters. :aidan

Good man....make sure you post up some pics & your 'off road tuition' review.....;)

Interested in how you get on as I'm keen to do something similar. I've driven Land Rovers for years but now I've just got a bike it all seems a bit different! Like the look of BMW's course up at Walters Arena but it's not cheap.

Brilliant day. I have been riding motorbikes since I was 14 (1974) (Greeves 250, then a BSA Starfire B25, then a Kwak 250 triple......etc.) I ALAWAYS come away from any course with new skills or knowledge, or having reaffirmed something from the past and bettered it. Today was a turning point for me. I haven't done any offroading as such - that Greeves got used around the orchard, but it was hardly offroad, and it was 40 years ago! After an hour of bike handling skills at slow speed and learning a few balance tricks that would stand us in good stead during the actual practical riding we headed for some easy gravel roads with some pot holes and puddles the size of a car. Gradually the severity of the ground was increased, and techniques for dealing with uphill and downhill starts and stopping were brought in. Then we were introduced to foot deep ruts, filled with water. Lunch was a wecome break and chance to run over the morning.....then back on the bikes and out around the back trails of the Peak District. If someone had told me, a total numpty afraid of my own shadow when it came to going off tarmac, that I would be riding up the steep, hairpin bendy, rocky stepped tracks we took on in the afternoon...I would never have believed it.

Gary took us all at the same pace, gauged to suit the group and adapted to ensure everyone had a good time and learned plenty. An easy approach that makes it fun too. Highly recommended. Now, I just have to pluck up the courage to try one or two of the trails on my GS....a different kettle of fish, but the techniques I am assured are the same. Much of the problem is in your head - the bike will do it if you apply the fundamentals. We shall see!

Thanks Gaz. :beerjug:

Pictures on the other thread - I didn't have a camera. I was advised to leave it behind and some will appear magically, on GSPOD's thread.

Great day yesterday folks, the best days weather in about 6 weeks. Timed perfectly as today is pissing it down :D
