Rusty chain ..........

I am anal about the chain and lube it without fail after every ride and clean it thoroughly every 300 or so miles. There are people on here who will attest to my anality with the bloody thing.

I will attest
" You are an arse"

Oh sorry -isn't that what you meant???:hide:hide

Pretty sure if a chain is always well lubed and not exposed to salt then it's chemically impossible for it to rust...ie if it's covered in oil it can't be exposed to water and air? Doesn't matter how good or bad the quality of the metal / finish is

I use old tooth brushes and paraffin .... :)

My chain has rust spots on it too .... Nothing i'm overly worried about, as and when the time comes I'll replace it with a nice gold DID chain ...

Agreed, it's only cosmetic, so what :)

But....... mines pretty much like Micky's, I'm surprised at yours, with a Scott Oiler, is looking like that.

As an aside I'm amazed how well modern chains work. 9,000 miles of a torquey 150bhp twin with occasional off roading and I've adjusted my chain maybe four times now and cleaned/oiled it no more than a dozen.

So, even with a scotoiler it'll rust?

I might have to look into one of these DID chains. Anyone know which one the XR will take?
Do they do a red one?:D

Interestingly, the bike is fitted only with a 520 chain (the usual fitment on mid-weight bikes).

Yeah .... but if you look at his photograph it looks like any oil from his Scott Oiler has been photoshopped out, it's as dry as a bone :blast

That's what I think. If it's gone rusty, it's not got any oil on it.

My experience with scottoilers is that it can be hard to get the lube across onto the inside o rings, let alone the outside of the plates.

I clean my chain occasionally with aerosol cleaner and a microfibre cloth but have recently ordered one of those special U brushes. Reading the posts here, I don't think I'll be using it now so that's another£1.50 wasted :(

As I couldn't sleep last night (a combination of auto renewing subscriptions, and rusty chains) I went in the garage to see how rusty my chain is, and it's not looking too bad.

That is my problem !

It has been very well doused in PJ1 blue label after every ride whether it looked like it needed it or not !

It has not done many wet miles and has never seen salt !

Maybe it's a crap chain then, cos my bikes been used over the winter, covered in mud, cow shit and salt and there's no rust on the chain.
I rinse the bike off after any dirty ride, but it sounds like you take more time with your chain.

My problem is solved

Called Marshalls to discuss the problem and book the 6K service

and a new chain will be fitted no qualms or argument.
The service bod remembered me telling them not to touch the chain at last service and acknowledged that it was a well looked after chain. He did say that their demo bike has a rusty chain despite them looking after it !

Good news :thumby: now try and look after this one :D

Ooooooo .... You need a good slap sometimes ....
The photo was from an installation thread on the chain oiler. It hadn't even been used yet!! (you cock!) :D

This photo is now minutes old ... !! So I've just dragged the bike out the shed to take a look at my chain!

And actually .... a year of chain oiler (it's not actually a scotoiler but something similar ..) and the rust spots have pretty much vanished and there's just a bit of a tarnish on the chain where they used to be .... ). Adjusted it once in 12k ... :thumb2

That chain is a disgrace ! :D **My rusty one isnt as bad

***It is and it shouldn't be

That chain is lovely and oily!! That's why it's only ever been adjusted once!

(I do have to regularly clean out by the small drive sprocket and the back of the number plate ..... !!)

Thats the point

Mine has never yet been adjusted because it has been so well lubed and cleaned but the bastard has still rusted

For what its worth I am so anal i would normally consider that chain of yours as dirty and in need of a clean
