Hello all,

Just wondered if anyone had visited here:

http://www.achtungpanzer.com/deutsches-panzermuseum-in-munster-germany.htm

If so, was it good? (Looks good). I am thinking of taking the GS over for a vist and camping around the area in an effort to keep the costs down. It would only be a flying visit - probably very early August, so weather should be OK. Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

Looks OK, but if someone gives it the thumbs down, another possibility is the Auto Technik Museum at Sinnsheim, http://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/ a slightly longer distance - 6hrs or so from Calais. But the possibility of a much more interesting ride.
A fair few military vehicles and a whole world of other mechanical stuff too. Its really more than you can take in, in a day.

If you have time to kill on the way and are passing near Mannheim, then the small town of Ladenburg has a tiny museum. It is housed in the original workshop of Carl Benz and naturally focuses, but not exclusively, on the stuff his company made. Some unusual and unexpected. (by me at least). https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...m2!3m1!1s0x4797c5bf5729935d:0x41ffd3c8d0950f0
If you go down by the river towards the Bahnhof, there was a neat little Imbiss (snack stall) very good Handkaese mit musik, which is handmade cheese with chopped onion, no doubt various wurst, and beer of course, should you indulge.

Its quite nearby the Neckar river, so down stream from the NSU/Auto Union original factory, the far side of Sinnsheim, which I believe also has just opened a museum. http://www.zweirad-museum.de/nsu-museum/das-nsu-museum.html Again not visited yet.

Sinsheim Museum is very good, butI would suggest the sister museum at Speyer which, for me, was much much better. Or do both

And Speyer is a lovely old town on the River Rhine, whilst Sinsheim is a non-descript little town with not a lot more than the museum and the Hofenheim football stadium

I've been to Sinsheim and Speyer ,if you are into ww2 vehicles then the former is the best of the two (Speyer better for space exhibits and bikes ), as for Munster it is on the to do list , I spoke to a gamekeeper a couple of years ago at a job who was and ex tankie and he had visited Munster a couple of times and said it was worth a visit.

Sure he mentioned about it being in or adjacent to an operational tank training base and that there were regular days when the exhibits were run and driven

I drove through Munster once and I had to smile when I saw the "No tanks" sign on the entrance to the town. They clearly have issues with squaddies etc driving their vehicles into town

Thanks for all the help guys. I will certainly look into a couple of the ones mentioned. If I do go, I'll post back and let you know what the Deutsches Panzermuseum Munster was like. :thumb2

Great Museum if you like large metal objects - I assume you are a GS owner?

I went to the Munster tank museum last year, it is housed in what used to be the old NATO tank base near to the east/west Germany boarder and has a very large collection of German and other armour from the 1st World War up to quite recent Cold war machines. I would highly recommend a visit.

Around that area I would also recommend a visit to Celle which is a pretty town with a pedestrianised centre and great ice cream shops, you could also consider a visit to the VW museum at Wolfsburg which has a massive automotive museum with cars and motorbikes from many different manufacturers as well as the VW marque specific museums.

If you get fed up of camping you can't do better than staying at the Biker Hotel Harmonie in Bad Grund in the Harz mountains (http://biker-hotel-harz.de/en/about-us/) which is right in the middle of some of the best biking roads around that area. South of Hotel Harmonie is the Nordhousen V2 rocket factory which is a sobering and eerie place.

Not sure where you are heading to/from but another place we went was Wuppertal where they have a 100 odd year old suspended monorail over the local river through the city which was an interesting experience!

Hope you have a great time where ever you end up.
