Stopped here on the last night of my recent Euro trip en route to Ijmuiden and the ferry home. Two hours short of the ferry, leaving you with a leisurely bimble and plenty of time in case of emergencies. Also only a few minutes south of the autobahn.
A Hollywood movie cliche of a German spa town with a castle, a Kurort (if you fancy taking the waters) a market square, a statue of Bismarck and loads of pensions, hotels etc. Being a cheapskate though, I stayed at the jugendherberge which is only a few hundred meters from the aforesaid square. Had the bottom floor all to myself.
I can recommend the Alte Bismarck where I ate a cracking schnitzel in pepper sauce (other sauces are available), fried tatties, side salad. Washed down with a large weize bier and a cheeky wee local schnapps as a digestif. 20 Euros.
If you're like me and you hate leaving a last minute dash to the ferry, this is the place to stop off at.
