Myself and my fiancée are spending three nights in Berlin next month and have allowed 3 days to get back with 2 overnight stopovers. Can anyone recommend a scenic route back and maybe some places to visit on the way? I'd prefer to return in a more south westerly direction back to Dunkirk, with possibly a visit to Colditz on the way.

I'm not familiar with northern Germany at all and I'd like to do it justice and not just hammer back along Autobahns :thumb2

Have a look at the sticky Germany Calling.

You sort of have two choices:

1. North to the Baltic coast and then westwards to about Hamburg and then down to Holland, Belgium and Dunkirk.

2. South to Dresden, into Czech Repub, then fang yourself northwest.

Given your timeframe, I'd go 1. Lots of attractive islands (including Germany's largest) and Hanseatic Towns.

Thanks Wapping. We are heading to Rugen Island for a couple of nights before dropping down to Berlin, so a more southerly route back might be better. I notice there are a few recommendations for the Harz region so I'll check those out.

I used to live in Dresden and it's def worth visiting - it's not as the Florence on the Elbe for nothing.

You'll not go far wrong in the Harz and it's a better return over three days to Dunkirk from Berlin than via Colditz.

This is a very crude map of the rough direction you might take. Me? I'd lob in some motorway to join the bits up where necessary... nobody will ever know!

Thanks Wapping, that route looks like something I could use. Have you gone to the Eifel National Park before?

This route is circumnavigating the lovely Sauerland area - basically the area south of Autobahn 44 - home of the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams of Dambusters fame :beerjug:

We did Berlin before the wall came down and chanced upon Hamelin of Pied Piper of Hamelin fame. Well worth a visit.

The Eder damn looks well worth a visit so I'll modify the route to take that in :thumb

I think I've been through Hamelin before, many years ago, I'll check that out.

Thanks for all the tips chaps, from what was originally looking like a bit of a boring route back there's now plenty to look forward to :beerjug:
