Thanks to lots of hints and tips on here I'm committed to my second trip to Germany in September. Out of Newcastle to Ijmuiden. Last year was my first bike venture to Europe - Harz & Frankfurt auto show - but this time my 10 day itinerary is hoping to include a few museums, war-like or motor-like, including Overloon, Porsche, Mercedes, Sinsheim, maybe Audi and maybe Nurburgring circuit. And a few nice roads in Eifel area and beyond

Next step is get busy with Booking .com or similar.

And prep the Zumo.

Speyer and Sinsheim a good 5 or 6 hours each and well worth it (both have facilities to leave your bike gear secure if you ask ).

Audi museum is a good 3 or 4 hours (when you get there ignore the car park on the left and pull right onto the main concourse in front of the museum and park beside the large security cabin.

Mercedes museum is at least a full half day, Porsche museum you can stretch it to about 90 minute if you are lucky

Thank you folks. I've been round Sinsheim once before - actually dragged my good lady round during a short break in Germany a few years ago - and remember my camera battery ran flat before I'd finished the museum tour. Did pop round by Speyer, but only looked through the fence due to time constraints.

I'm surprised (disappointed) the Porsche shed is poorly rated. Will bear that in mind.

It depends... Been round 4 times, but always in conjunction with a full factory tour, Lunch in the Casino and then an afternoon being driver round the Weissach test track by nutters :D
That was when the museum was just inside the factory gate.
We were going to get a couple of cam covers from the Indy car motor, but management pulled the plug plug on that. I was told that EVERYTHING from that programme was crushed.
Did they keep a car in the museum?

Got home in 1 piece today. After approx 1,750 miles in 12 days.
Will hopefully pop a few pics on here sometime soon. Usual stuff like steak, beer, etc.

Suffice to say it was generally brill. From quiet countryside to maxxing out on the autobahn. Having to lean in to a motorway curve made me chuckle. And I met my first 100mph white van man.

Scorching at 30+ down to 7.5 degrees. Rain on 2 days only.

9 nights in Germany, hotels were 3x 2 nights and 3x 1 night. From very nice to Fawlty Towers. Mostly via booking dot com.

Main highlights were:
Overloon WW2 tank & truck museum with stuff I'd never heard of before.
Nurburgring circuit where I was melting and passed on the 250 EU joy ride in the Porsche passenger seat.
Hockenheim classic bike race meeting with some super examples.
Sinsheim Technik museum where I had Concorde to myself.
Mercedes museum.

Plus some fantastic roads at or near both Cochem and Baden-Baden.
Much of the above thanks to hints and tips from this parish.

My Zumo 660 generally played ball. Occasionally had a hissy fit and suggested I exit a perfectly good road.
I must update my Netherlands maps as things went a bit AWOL there. Luckily I have a good sense of direction and knew where I was going.

After thinking about it once or twice after missing the opportunity, I got into the habit of re-running a stretch of road that was particularly fantastic :)

Fuel consumption was anything up to 60+ depending on the roads and traffic.
Maximum Warp Factor was Zumo 213 kph (a glance at dash showed 137)

On the B500 I was flashed by a strange green post on the wrong side of the road. Not sure if anyone will track me down. I was surprised as I was not speeding as the sign had just changed from 50 to 70 and I was picking up the pace gently.

DFDS ferry out of North Shields ran smoothly on a flat calm N Sea both ways.
