This is incredible
I received my renewal for my BMWR1200GS 2014 LC which was £270 and although I thought it fairly expensive, I phoned to renew, and during the phone call I asked them to remove two lapsed items from my insurance docs (one not at fault accident from 2008 and one SP 30 conviction from 2009) the guy then told me that was fine and shouldn't make ant difference but that his screen was now saying the price was £339 - he checked with the underwriters and they confirmed it

I said no way and after various phone calls with them they said it's just the price given in the day by the underwriters

So I canceled the insurance at the end of term and went on to the Devitt/Mottorad website and put all the same details in and took out a fresh policy which appears to be the same for £149 !!

So it pays to get a fresh web quote if the premium seems high

Call with the quote, go through your details and the price will most probably go back to 339.
There might be something else that triggers the price increase.

Been there.

If it makes you feel better (I doubt) my last premium increase was of roughly that amount. :D

For the last 10 years I have never accepted a renewal quote on any of my vehicles, cars or bikes. I always shop around and always save myself at least 50% on the renewal. The whole industry is a scam.

I don't think they should be allowed to auto renew if the premium goes up by more than (say) 5%

I think that the auto renewal idea has its good points because the default position is you have insurance rather than no auto renewal means no insurance no cover if you forget. A bit like having your credit card direct debit cover the minimum payment. I suppose I'm describing peace of mind.

Well Direct Line write to you about 2 to 4 weeks before the insurance is due to expire. My house insurance came in this week and I had a look around saving myself £157 with another insurer.

I rang them to see what they would say. The opener was " we are not a premium led insurer but let us run through your needs to see if we can do something". I pointed out that I wouldn't be taking part in the "lets have another look" because, if they got close then they were lifting my leg in the first place with the auto renewal and I didn't want them to be embarrassed. Told them i will see them next time!

Mother in law just got the renewal quote for her car , autorenewal and a hike in premiums by over 100% despite no claims

If you sell a bike and cancel insurance you can get a discount if renew with the same insurer. Bennets in this case. Got me down to 59 quid, full comp, ncp, 250 comp ecess. For a 2009 gs.

Its a condition of their policy.

..and let them know, for example, if there are changes to the place you keep your bike overnight. Fair enough, but they told me to let them know if the bike is going to be left in a hotel car park. Not a massive problem on the face of it but they seem to keep the phone call going for half an hour every time you ring them.

I've just had the same with Motorcycle Direct. My policy last year was £240 for my 2016 GSA and this year they quoted me £280. So I went on comparethe market and found cover for £148 with Hastings. The annoying thing was that Motorcycle Direct was on there for £220!!! I asked him what the hell and he just said sorry they wouldn't reduce the price. It's a pity as I have been with them for a few years but how can it be nearly half when I've been with them for so long?
Conning bastards..

Insurance quotes... just choose the number that you like the most.

But bods like help choosing things. Without it they get confused and, very often, quite cross. This applies as much to numbers as it does to really hard things like gloves.

I'll start a simple list (not of all the numbers) to get bods started:

Zero, comes first.

One, is next.

Two comes after one and is twice * one but it's not twice (or more) times zero. Numbers are funny like that, so watch out.

Three, is next. This is the same as zero, one and two added together. It might help if you imagine it as sticks, which you want to join together to build a fire. Like when you go wild camping or make your dinner at home at lunchtime. Everyone has dinner at lunchtime, as having it in the evening - when you have tea - is just plain wrong.

* Twice is another word for double, or multiply by two. These are longer words, so stick with twice until you get the hang of the numbers up to say 18 or even 23.

For goodness sake, can there still be ill-informed people who simply renew when they receive an insurance quote. This subject has been done to death on every forum I've ever seen ... still I suppose there are youngsters who need training.

By the way, insurers charging exorbitant premiums isn't a scam - it's called business and they are in it to make as much as they can. Don't let those socialist wallahs try to convince you of anything different.

If they took the money and then didn't insure you then I suppose you could call that a scam ..
