seeing all the 'merkins and their mountain trail riding escapades and fire roads makes me a bit jealous and though I know Scottish laws really prohibit us doing anything similar up here, is there any options for any light offroading? or are we completely bound to tarmac or having to plan far flung trips?

Down the borders and into Dumfries n galloway there are a few forest drives , raiders road about 12miles long and loch doon has one about 6 or 7 miles long...also Kielder forest has a forest drive ..think its about 10 miles long ..

Plenty of forest tracks to venture on. You just need to know where.
