I'm fairly new to the forum but every opportunity and all that......................

By profession, I'm a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, working on NHS contracts and in private practice. I specialise in tackling Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (no, if you just like your garage nice and tidy, you don't have OCD) and PTSD and also help clients deal with panic attacks, phobias and other anxiety conditions.

I'm seeing rising numbers of clients with depression and whilst as a condition, it is difficult to 'cure', a good deal of my work is helping clients recognise it, develop resilience to it and cope with it in better ways.

I make a decent living from my contract work and I think it's important to put a bit back. Anxiety and depression can be completely debilitating, particularly for young people and the growth in social media isn't helping. I run a clinic in Manchester city centre and one near Blackpool, but also work by video conferencing for clients who are unable to get to them.

So, here's the thing. If you or a loved one (I work with people 17+) is trying to tackle any of the things above and would like some help, feel free to DM me for my number, my website details or a conversation. A chat is free and I'm happy to try and help. If I think I can't, I'll tell you and I'm happy to help you find someone who might be able to, if you would like me to.

Most clients take around 6-12 sessions to see a major difference. OCD is a little different due to the nature of the condition. I have standard rates that I charge, but if you contact me through here, I'm happy to forego those and agree a rate that you feel is affordable for you.

I'm qualified at a post graduate level, have membership of my professional body and am fully insured....just for the record.

My Son recently graduated from Manchester with a psychology degree, and is now doing research for a local company with a view to going on to his Doctorate. His dissertation was on the behaviour of people on internet forums, in contrast to their day to day personal interactive conduct. I should have pointed him in the direction of UKGSER, he'd have had a field day ! Yours is not a subject I understand well, far too deep for me.

Would love to know what your son's conclusion was ?

Difficult time of year for a lot of people. I wish you well with your kind offer of support.

Mongoose, that is a thoroughly decent and charitable offer, and timely, this can be a very difficult time of year for some. Best wishes

I would seriously love to hear your son's views on some of the characters in here.

Good of you to offer to help Mongoose :thumb2

And I would say, all the friends I have on here who I've met in person, and that's all of them, are just the same in real life. Which is scary. And worrying. Just kidding....a bit!:D:beerjug:

They may have been missing internet forums in 1956 but they had The Lady and other state of the art media where one could adopt a persona

BTW, have we met?

Hi Wessie I don't think so I tend to avoid bikers they are a weird bunch you know:D

Hello.
Yes depression can be as debilitating as having a broken leg. But just invisible.
Building resilience is for sure important to avoid recurrence...
In my own limited experience... Regular Exercise is the most effective "medicine", like 30 mins running or 10 mile bike rides a couple of times per week. Easier in the summer.
I also think the freedom of motorbikes can help. Firstly you feel in control and it's an involving hobby, away from the stresses and strains of daily life.
Secondly bikers tend to be relatively non judgemental.. If you ride a bike, more or less you are already accepted as a member of the tribe / club.
When I was down, I rediscovered motorcycles after a 20+ year absence.
Got a GS... Done some amazing trips on it ( and a few courses)... And haven't looked back since...

You make a very valid point and in fact, a significant part of the treatment for depression when using CBT is behavioural activation ie getting you out and about, preferably involving exercise. As you say, motorbikes of any kind are involving and also immediately put you into a recognisable social group, which can reduce isolation and lift the mood.

The broken leg analogy is critical to the whole debate around tackling mental health issues. If you have a broken leg, you go and get it sorted as rapidly as possible, as not doing can result in significant consequences. For some reason, we (Particularly men) treat illness in our most complex organ completely differently. Mind you, blokes are also fairly rubbish at anything health related full stop. It's why so many men are diagnosed with cancer at stage 4 - we ignore glaring symptoms and signs that something is wrong until it's too late.

Fortunately with mental health, its never too late. I do find it incredibly sad however when I get clients who have been dealing with mental health issues for 30, 40 or even 50 years + and have never sought help. Life could have been so much different for them if only they had.
