New Engine !!!

You would think that some entrepreneur would approach BMW and do a deal with them to pick up complete motors from dealers , strip the paint from the engines and properly refinish them and then return them to the dealers to be refitted to the customers bikes .

Got to be a cheaper option than new motors or full rebuilds into new casings

This I need to see, 99% of Bmw tech's don't no how to build an engine.

Had a K1600GT that had engine corrosion, not bad, more white spots, but BMW decided that it would be rebuilt with new cases, I saw the list of parts required to rebuilt, it was 3 pages long and totalled 4K! It's a mad situation. There must be a better paint solution surely. Yes it has put me off BMW, I'm now riding a Crosstourer.

ended up with 3 engines on a GSA 1200 WC was back about 8 times with damage to, ended up selling it after they finally got the damn thing right, all started with an oil seal left off. Bm really need to get things sorted at the dealer network, some good ones but some nightmare ones to

Thing is how many technicians working and trained within the dealer network actually have to rebuild motors as a matter of course, during the warranty period the manufacturer will provide a crate engine and once out of warranty the owner will go to an independant or if they can do it themselves .

Said it before but I actually feel sorry for the dealers when BMW will only be paying them factory quoted times for warranty work which are usually totally unfeasibly short.

At least if they are now building used internals into new casings it will give them a bit of practice.

looks like I'm being lied to then!
The dealer told me that he needs to collate part numbers and get parts availability first. To be honest they aren't my regular dealer as I've moved house and I'm not particularly impressed by them so far.

You've been spun a yarn. Which dealer told you this?

These is only one BMW bloke I know who could build an engine, spot on............skywalker

They fitted a new short block to mine a couple of weeks ago - everything except the heads were replaced. New crank, case, flywheel, gearbox etc - much smoother and better gearbox etc.

My local dealer told me BMW stopped fitting complete new engines a while ago.

My problem with the scenario of your internals being built into new casings is that the engine will be as good as the technician who is building it .

Most are not engine building specialists ,they are service technicians and few if any dealers will have a 'clean room' in which to build engines and will not have access to all of the factory production tools.

Having visited a couple of engine and gearbox factories in the past they were as far as possible from the building a motor an a bench in the corner of the service bay scenario as it is possible to get

I always thought it was the water based paint as the 1100's didn't seem to have an issue, I tried to strip the paint off a 1100 gs years ago and it was a sod to remove.

Also with the 2 year warranty on all 2nd hand BM's I wonder if they would replace major components under it ?

Reason I am in here is I am on the cusp of buying a 2006 fully loaded RT with 30k odd miles up and am twitching because for some reason my subconscious keeps telling me not to do it, it has servo brakes too

You can have my 2007 RT with 17,000 if you want. ABS already faulty, so you'll know where you are with it. :)

That's a shame, 4 days too late, my new purchase is already booked in for 2 outstanding recalls :blast fuel pump and wheel hub.

Well... finally got my bike back today having had a new final drive and new engine cases including cylinder heads. . A few interesting things,
1. after a full engine rebuild they only did a 3 mile test ride on it.
2. They "advise" that the engine oil & final drive oil be replaced after 600miles but it's not a running in service as such so isn't covered in the warranty claim. Unlike the engine replacement on my previous GS which had the 600mile service done gratis.
3. They hadn't bloomin washed it!! Taken bikes into other dealers for even a software update and it got washed!
4. The repair is only warrantied until the end of the standard 2 year warranty (4 weeks away).

So you now have a fully rebuilt engine with a 2 month warranty, will the engine be fully covered against any 'manufacturing ' problems if you take out the BMW extended warranty ?

This sounds pretty cack.... not sure I would have full confidence in the engine after that. Think a bit of corrosion would be preferable to an engine rebuilt by people who dont do that for a living in premises not used to that kind of heart surgery.

Poor show BMW, the constant niggles on forums about corrossion has contributed to educating me that my next bike will not be a BMW (I was going for an RT, but gonna go a different route now).

RBW.
