When I were a lad we turned the stator plate on a vespa 50 special (a mate's scooter
) as far forward as it would go, almost to TDC, and managed to bump start it backwards
It ran just about and you could stay on for several secconds

Villiers supplied engines to Bond cars in the '50's and '60's with electric start and I believe two sets of points. You could turn the ignition key right or left. Right gave you forward, four gears to play with; left gave you reverse and not surprisingly the same four gears. You really needed skills and balls of steel to go fast in reverse with the steering geometry effectively arse about face doing its best to tip you over. A thing that wasn't too difficult in an ultra-lightweight three wheeled car.
I'm sure you could fit one of those into a bike chassis.
