Biking in NZ is bliss. Except on Public hollidays the police are quite tolerant about sensible speeds. The only negative I can think of is the bit of State Highway1 (SH1) through Auckland ....... others might say it is Auckland itself

Yep I agree with all the comments regarding your bike trip from Sydney to Cairns, three weeks ago i caught a plane and flew from Sydney to Cairns picked up a 1989 BMW GSPD and rode it back to Sydney no sight seeing just riding and fuel stops.
Did 700km Saturday afternoon after the deal for the bike was done, motel, dinner, beer and bed, Sunday 1100k motel, dinner, beer and bed, Monday 800km to home as said most of the trip is straight roads loads of cameras and coppers thunder storms and heat.
But the best bit was riding the GSPD loved it, there are some really good biking roads here in Australia but not on the direct route from Sydney to Cairns so I think you have made the right choice.
    Cheers Jim

See mike o's posts about NZ, the Feds are a bit keen on limits there as well it seems.
