Okay, so, you know when you buy something off ebay because its cheap ? And it winds up costing you an endless bloody fortune ? Well I have done that, so after the MOT fail which needed "just a brake cylinder" cost me almost £900, its now apparent thanks to the good BMW machine, that my N reg 1100GS has a failed rear ABS sensor. Which apparently is another £400 worth ! Sigh.

Now, heres a thing, I haven't even ridden the bloody thing yet. So, do I quit while I'm behind and get shot and get a better one, do I get it fixed, or do I get rid of the ABS altogether ?? Apparently, the ABS isn't much anyway, but as I say I've not ridden this, or any other GS......or any other bike for near 30 years !

One of the things that appealed about this bike was the ABS, having spent those 30 years off bikes, I felt that ABS might be an advantage for me in my dotage (now 51), but if this is just the thin edge of the wedge, then I am wondering what to do !

Please, can anyone help me, be you a GS1100 rider or another BMW kind of guy ! Anyone ???

Not sure where your prices are from as Motorworks list a genuine new rear sensor for £110 and guaranteed s/hand one for £55

Its what I've been quoted from my local garage, they have a great name and aren't seen as being over expensive, £180 for the sensor they say. Is it perhaps something I could do myself ?

Mate you are panicking over nothing Re the ABS !!

Lift the fusebox lid and pop out the BLUE relay and KEEP IT SAFE

ABS deactivated! YOU will have one ABS lamp lit on the dash!

Oh and Step the Fuck away from the workshop you are using!!!! They sound to be ripping the arse clean out of you!!!!

If you need parts Check out Motorworks, Motobins, and james Sherlocks as the principle used parts suppliers!

Also E bay

AND Find yourself an independent workshop

Steptoe is your man! He will sort your bike out and WON'T rip you off! :thumb2

OK, so sounds like I'm being mugged. The problem started when the guy I bought the bike off dropped it off to Lind Motorrad (the bike had been serviced there from new for its 100,000 miles) and they quoted me £3500 to sort the brakes out......and the clutch....and the rear shock and my Porsche.........and then I spoke to the local guy and he did a ton of work on the brakes for the £800, it is just particularly disappointing that after all that the rear sensor is buggered.

Does anyone have a good workshop who'll fit the parts at a slightly less spleen disintegrating amount in Hertfordshire ??

And thank you all so much for your thoughts. I particularly like "Oh and Step the Fuck away from the workshop you are using!!!! They sound to be ripping the arse clean out of you!!!!

You guys think the way I do !!!

Dr Farkoff summed it up perfectly for you. Walk away. The 1100 is a superb bike. Stick with it!

What fucking work on the brakes resulted in a bill for £800 - did you have them gold plated?

You need to find yourself a decent independent with a good reputation. Failing that, go to Steptoe... :D

Are you sure you've bought the right bike mate. Sounds like you've been had.

Stop the panic posting.
Go to bed, have a wank/shag which will help reduce stress levels. (Obviously not over the bike you pervert.)
In the morning - have a wank to make sure your stress levels are low. Then call your mechanic and tell him to fuck the fucking fuck off.
Read a bit more on here, then after a few wanks and by noon, you'll be relaxed enough to realise UKGSER will provide all you'll ever need to know you've actually bought the best bmw model.....after the 1150 imho anyway:D

Clearly your confidence in your purchase has taken a bit of a dent.

However, you have been given good sound advice as to what you should do. Personally if I was you I would heed that advice.

There is no reason to pay large sums of money to maintain an 'old' bike. I would certainly steer clear of main dealers, there hourly rate is astronomical.

As has already been said find yourself an independent who either specialises in BMW bikes, or has a proven track record from recommendations on this forum.

If I lived where you did, I would get in touch with Steptoe.

Blog; A day in the life of flatdog :D Good advice but assuming the OP has similar stamina!

Tell then to put their ball in a vice grips and fuck off. I see the doc is after posting so ill read this tomorrow but keep calm. Kill your mech though. **** might be a word

Thanks everyone, its good to know that this is one of those "helpful" forums (fori ?) where people actually give a rats arse and offer useful advice (clearly with humour!!), so thanks !

In short I will give Mr Motoscot a call, I've been on Motoworks (sp?) this morning and yes indeed it seems a good used rear ABS sensor is just £55, and I've had a look at the old interweb, it doesn't seem as though removing and replacing said sensor looks remotely like rocket science, just something you need to be careful with, shims in particular.

As for the £871 of brakework, here is part of the invoice. It was done by an independent here in Harpenden (don't need to look hard to work out who, there is only one !) and I've cut out all the bit with my address on (someone told me that wasn't safe to put my address on the interweb!!) but you can see there is not a ton of work (there is a new tyre at £166 + VAT however) but what can I say, I was in Australia, they had my bike and I needed it MOT'd - not a good situation to be in.

As for the bike, considering I've only ridden it round the block twice (having dropped the fucker twice trying to get it on and off the effing centre stand - didn't know it was going to be THAT hard !!!) I really like the bike, it feels like a moped when its actually moving and it shrinks around you, love that. And even though it is leggy (110k mile) it has been well looked after and has a cool history, one of the head honchos of the BMW Club owned it and another leading light from the club before him, and there was tons of history (all BMW main dealer) and articles in the club magazine etc although the arse I bought it from has thrown all the history out "by mistake" - how in Gods name can people do that ? Are they mentally subnormal ? Fucking idiots ! But I have a print out from BM showing that the bike was brought in religiously and a lot of money bestowed on this old thing and I like that. But again, if I'd be better off flogging it and buying a better one, answers on a postcard please !!:bounce1

Oh, and i do love it when people can't spell. Its fucking CALIPERS !!!! Lucky they didn't call them BREAKS !!! Sigh.

Good call, get along to Motoscot as he is only 10mins ride away from you.

He does go on a bit, but does know his stuff. Fingers crossed it will get resolved :beerjug:
