Does anyone have any experience of modifying these to firm them up?

If they are moving too much for you it may be that the rubber insulating blocks have perished. Happened on mine when I had one. If I recall they fit onto tangs on the bars and then into square holes below the bar mounts and are supposed to be a reasonably tight fit. I got some new blocks from Motorworks and it firmed the bars up nicely.
On my K1100RS I swapped put the rubber bushes and added some spacers. Makes all the difference.
