What does this button/symbol do?....

Press on that and it stops current navigation.
EDIT: Forget that, I didn;t read properly - the red x stops navigation. I think it creates and saves a waypoint where you are when you press it.
EDIT AGAIN: Flaming T has a different answer. Go with his rather than mine!

It skips to the next way point on your journey following the nav..... just in case the way point is not located on the main road but a siding. The Nav will try to take you back to it until you actually go past it.
That's the red x button to stop navigation...
