Hello folks,

I have got the GS ready to replace the steering head bearings. I have a seat from Pyramid Parts to replace the notched BMW ones.

Firstly, I have a question about caps.

The existing bearings have a pair of caps fitted - one below the bottom set[ii] and one above the top set. They look like this: outside & inside.

The Pyramid parts ones come with seals / washers like this: one side & other side. Are these very differently shaped items direct replacements for the caps/washers on the BMW bearings or do I now need to get a new pair of these to go over the Pyramid Parts bearings?

Secondly, do you have any advice on fitting the two outer races? The Haynes book-of-lies says to use a long threaded bar, two large strong washers, nuts etc to make up a tool to draw the outer races (which are already in the freezer) into place simultaneously. Any better suggestions?

Cheers

M

not "what colour flat cap should I wear when installing the new bearings" ;)
[ii] now ruined by the process of removing the lower bearing inner
