Has anybody had any experience of using throwover panniers on the 1200GS LC? Are they any specifically which fit or are better than others? I am considering these as a low cost alternative to hard panniers due to the fact that I dont do any real touring as such but would like the extra luggage space if I decide to use the bike for work where I often have to stay overnight. I need to carry my laptop and office stuff which I will put in a top box but will need extra room for a change of clothes etc.

Take a look at Kriega's range, excellent quality and modular. The best in my opinion

Ride magazine did a review recenty on throw over panniers and one that given the Best Buy accolade was QBag Pannier Bags @ £76.99 from Sportsbikeshop.

Ride said "Feels similar in design to a small, light set of hard boxes".

I was going to do the same thing, you will need some kind of pannier frames to support the throw over cases. The exhaust is main problem. I didn't like the set up so the Givi panniers frames are up for sale. I will have something fabricated.

Used the 50l version of the Jofama's soft bagged on every bike I've owned. Lots of straps and mounting points. Not waterproof but I have waterproof inner bags so not an issue.:thumb2

Kappa Wa404s 50L top loading roll bag in the back seat for about £55 will do the trick, be careful with the end loading ones as they are great for tents and sleeping bags etc but otherwise they can sometimes be a pain when getting access to other stuff / smaller items. I wouldn't bother with throwovers.

How about a waterproof messenger bag. That's what I use on bike trips. It sits in the rear seat with a rock strap securing it to the rack on the top lid of my top back and another start to the grab rails. I unclip it and throw it over my shoulder when I arrive at my destination/hotel but if it's a short commute I can just wear it . :thumb

A tail pack on the back seat is a good way to go + you can use it as a back rest! :) I have the small BMW one. Waterproof and looks 'right'. That + top box and a tank bag and you could do 10 days on the road (without the need for panniers) if riding solo.

Most throw over bags dont sit well on the exhaust side pannier rack
Marc at Cymarc might you make you one of these, it helps but they still don't sit perfectly square - heat refelective material on the exhaust inner side - really well thought out and made.

I did a bit of research and found very few really secure solutions.

The best and MOST expensive solution I found was a BMW own solution ---- ATACAMA PANNIERS BUT only available in America
So having just robbed a bank I duly ordered a set of Atacama Soft Panniers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL9UDh1hRJU
Obviously it isnt me on the video?? :thumby:

They are secure and robust and a doddle to fit and remove at the of every day, easier to load onto the bike and more comfortable and dignified than a roll bag. :p:cool:
Ive just done a 10 day tour in ireland - pissing with rain and they held up perfectly, they get very dirty with all of the road wash and as they are material they do hold the shit, but all ok really.

Cheers for all the suggestions, reason for asking was looking to try and save money and not have some frames permanently attached....in the end up I've bitten the bullet and bought some used various.

BMW Atacama soft luggage

The BMW Atacama soft luggage is made by a US company Mosko Moto.

Here: https://moskomoto.com/

They are a bit cheaper direct from the company...but with shipping and VAT not sure it would be worth the trouble.

Now if you hade a friend in the US that might work.

I have used these all over the US and Central America. They are the best soft luggage available. Check out their full line also.

Dan
