Navigator VI and Garmin Virb XE Camera

The speedo and revs guages all automatically calibrate based on the maximum readings in the Telemetry data for that particular video clip.

If I had been on a race track doing 180mph and 15,000 rpm, the guages would recalibrate to show that.

Thank you.

Hi,

There's a couple of the guages not showing any readings, not sure if this is normal or because I'm not getting a full read out from the OBDII but in the Data tab in the Virb Edit software there doesn't appear to be any listings for the these.

The info you will get from the OBDII sensors are:

Engine Load
Coolant Temperature
Engine RPM
Vehicle Speed
Intake Air Temperature
Throttle Position

It would be nice if there was a few more, like torque for example but that seems to be it.

i'm still playing with the gauge arrangements, i've added in the Brake/ Acceleration bar gauge (under Motion | Acceleration) which works nicely. The ones measured in G force are useless though as it will be very rare if they ever move off zero G.

If you lower your camera viewing angle slightly, you'll have less 'bright sky' and more road. The darker areas will then be brighter.

At least now you have the extension lead, you can easily unplug the cheapy OBD2 reader when you dont want it on Standby

Apparently there's an MX version that is WIFI based which works with IOS Devices. I contacted Garmin support and they couldn't confirm if the Virb would work with them over WIFI. Said there tech guys were looking into it and would get back to me. Haven't heard anything yet. If it works I may go for that over the bluetooth version as I want a unit that will power off automatically and would be great to be able to connect to iPhone as well.

Good info. Will be interested to hear result.

Finally got to test the virb elite, I like the way I can just press the nav vi screen to start recording or take a picture. Have a sena 10s linked to the nav vi, obviously this set up doesn't let me commentate through the sena onto the garmin which is a shame, may well invest in a sena 10c and fit the virb to the bike.

Warlord wondering where you located your power supply for the rear camera? I have now installed the Hex Can and have the front setup but now in the process where to put the rear power supply. Ideas would help.

Both my camera cables were cut and shortened (so no excessive cables to hide), the only other bulky items were the inline power blocks. These are thin enough to hide under the rear tail part of the bike (out of sight).

Basically I unceremoniously (and carefully) stuffed them out of sight as both of the power blocks will fit through the small gap into the rear tail section. That's where mine are now.

I'd struggle to place them anywhere else as the space it too tight under the passenger seat.

Was out yesterday on an Escorted Ride-out for Charity.

Was a good day and took the GSA for a spin.

It was a last minute decision to go and join in. That's what I love about this camera setup, it's always ready to do it's stuff with no hassle.

Warlord, what do you use your setup for, is it as a "dash cam insurance" type set up or for making films for entertainment/memories purpose?

All of the above.

Primarily I wanted an Incident/Accident recording both front and rear on my motorcycle. I use the NextBase 512G front and rear on my car. So wanted something for my motorcycle. I haven't notified either insurance company that I have dash cam footage, but it will be available should I need it. I didn't declare dash cams in case for some weird reason they didn't work on the day.

(My partner Louise works in Accident Insurance processing complicated claims)... so I know VERY well how it all turns to shit in the event of a weird claim (hit and run, disputed actions, knock for knock, aggressive behaviour, fraudulent claims). Camera's help a lot.

Secondary, for memories and recording events. Lots of good times on bikes with various mates (past and present) that you can watch again and it brings a smile to your face on a rainy day.

I try and pick out a selection of good moments from a days ride, put it in a video and delete all the old footage. So in theory, just keep the fun bits.

Understand that, was the first thing the police asked me when I lost my shoulder in my accident "did you have your GoPro on?"

It's a necessity now I think.

Forget self incrimination, it's the really evil fuckers out there who will gladly run you off the road and think nothing of leaving you for dead.

Few people now take responsibility for their actions, most will run like cowards with their first thought "How do I get away with this!!", it's disgraceful (but then that seems to be an old word now which does not apply to modern life)

Camera's might just be the final 'justice' in the story if you have them (for what its worth).

In all other events the Insurance Company and Police will thank you for it.

Surveillance Mode : Active

I replayed this gem of a conversation from my trip yesterday.

Two guys approached my bike while I was away doing something else.

No idea who they are, but my bike was in Surveillance Mode and recording everything around it. This is exactly what I see and hear on my Mobile Phone which is connected to each Camera via WiFi. Picture and Audio. So long as you are in Wifi Range (about 50 Meters, or more if outside).

It's a good example of my Garmin Camera's audio quality and what people think of my bike, when I'm not around. What would you hear people say about yours? :blast

Haha :thumb2

how is the clear plastic window of the virb holding up? or do u have a plastic protector on it? very exposed on the front bike, know the lens is safe behind the door and ya can buy new door if needed. but quite pricey

thanks

So far its all good. No issues, in fact because its got a special coating to repel water, flies dont easily stick to it. So thats a bonus.

The ONLY issue I've had so far is fogging on the inside of the door window of the camera.

This was water ingress from washing the bike after a ride.

I've since put plastic sandwich bags over both cameras, just during washing to keep hosepipe water off, and they remain dry.

I now bake the removable moisture cards in oven to keep them dry every now and then. No more fogging, so all is good.

Short video with Exhaust Note Sound.

Ride was getting a bit boring, so I double tapped the horn, let the guy in front know I was overtaking him.

Then let the R1200GS Adventure do its thing...:thumb

Enjoy :beerjug:

only just got the xe cam and I'm waiting for the mounting brk to arrive. Had it on a ram mount at the weekend and thought the cam was a bit exposed. Glad to know the flies don't stick too much.
so much easier starting/stopping the recording with the nav, hated all that with the go pro.

Just ordered a Virb XE Auto Racing Bundle which comes with a OBD2 adapter that looks like a rebadged Scantool MX :)

I really want two of the rugged 10M cables but they are so expensive. $75 AUD for one here and the whole camera bundle with the extra mount and OBD2 scantool is only costing me $380
