Are they widely available in Ireland?
Yes, at the end of a rainbow......right beside the Pot O'Gold.
First time I saw one was about 3 years ago - it was left @ Tom Crean's grave in Annascaul. They are apparently available from the Royal British Legion's Irish branches, but I have not encountered them beyond Crean's grave & recently Varadkar's lapel .
While we are in the area https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/poppy-must-not-be-twisted-into-symbol-of-division-1.3285941 is worth a read.

It's a pity the loyalist terrorists UVF/UDA have hijacked the poppy and politicised it.
"Nobody should need to explain themselves for wearing a poppy. Nobody should need to explain themselves for not wearing a poppy. Wear one, don’t wear one. Choice is the hallmark of a free society."
Perhaps a wee silent thought within your head is the best remembrance?
I'll send you this if you wish.
