Can anyone confirm whether silkolene 80w90 gl-5 oil is good for the gearbox on the 200 1150gs please? i have tried to find a specific recommendation anywhere but have not managed....Other forums have said at least gl-5...would that be correct??

yes GL5 is a must, and 75w90 or 80w90 works fine. some (including me currently) use 75w140.

i have read and been told that this stuff is good, so am going to try it on the next change:

Can I ask what the difference is between the 140 grade and the 90 grade. if i understand correctly it relates to the viscosity at high operating temperatures. if i understand the literature correctly it would mean that the 140 grade would be more capable/resistant at higher operating temperatures. is that right?

The 140 is thicker (more viscous) than the 90 at the same temperature. It just seems to 'cushion' more, making gear changes somewhat softer. I had to warm the 140 a bit by sitting the bottle in some hot water before putting it in, as in my cold garage it was like treacle.
