Fly-drive is an excellent suggestion. You could fly to say Vienna or Prague and then head eastwards, maybe into Slovenia and then down into the former Yugoslavia.

Good suggestions as they are, as I read it, the fellow wants to go east on his holiday. Having him trolling through the fields and graveyards of the WW1 corridor won't aid his passage towards his destination. The chap lives in London; it's a short one day hop to Ypres and back, two days (a weekend) if he wants to see several sites along the A26 southwards.

Surely as Cheap as a ferry and you get the steering wheel in the right place for being over there driving with all those foreign jonnies
Good advice. We flew to Munich and hired a 2 Series convertible a couple of years ago to do 12 days around the Alps and Northern Italy. Worked out cheaper than taking our own car and gave us more time at the coal face. No reason why that wouldn't be an even better idea going further east/south, so well worth exploring.

My mistake, I didn't read the wish list properly.

always worth considering the autozug train from Dusseldorf to Vienna. Car onboard with overnight sleeper wake up in vienna for breakfast.
Romania, Slovenia, Hungary all on your doorstep from there.
Cost wise not a great deal more in what you would spend on fuel and an hotel stop for the distance.
