Good luck David.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Summary, I abandoned the trail.

Travelled from Notts to Popham Airfield starting point (140 miles) in Hampshire and got soaked on the way down. Managed to dry out a bit until my start time of 18.11. The following 94 miles to Bridgewater were miserable. Cold and wet, soaked through completely. My boots were full of water and despite heated grips and heated waistcoat I was soaking and cold when we reached the Rugby Club in Bridgwater.

The bike passed scrutiny a second time and whilst having dinner I decided to abandon the trail on the grounds that it wasn't fun anymore. 22.30. All of the off road sections come after Bridgwater.

I managed to book a hotel on the M5 11 miles north of Bridgwater and returned home today. It took about 5 hours with a stop at Cirencester.

It was bloody cold and due to get colder overnight. Once soaked through, it ceased to be fun and was only going to get miserable.

I'll sign up for the Edinburgh Trial. Perhaps we can get a team together. You should have done most of these lanes Bill!

The bike didn't miss a beat throughout, even after fording through some deeply flooded roads.

Sorry if I disappointed you.

Disappoint?

Bog off! It’s not a race is it, it’s supposed to be a fun event.....what’s the point of doing it if you ain’t having fun?

Light a fire and pour yourself a big one and........relax.

Well done dude :)

Absolutely the right decision old son!
No point at all if you’re not enjoying it.
I remember amate and I pulling out of the KIMM the year it was in the Howgills for exactly the same reason.
Edinburgh?
Perhaps!

No shame in being sensible Nipper. As has already been said it's meant to be fun, when the fun stops, stop.

You can’t change the weather and when it stops being fun it’s time to knock it on the head. Let’s hope the weather is on your side for Edinburgh :thumb2

Sounds like you made the right call Tufty, enjoy those G&T's well deserved mister.

Well done for making the attempt.

More than I would have done looking at the weather forecast.

Enjoy the drink. You do deserve it.

I understand completely.

When I did the Edinburgh in 1999 or 2000 on an R80G/S I lived in north Derbyshire, less than 30 miles from the start at Woodhall Services on the M1. By the time I got there on the Friday evening I was soaked to the skin and my boots were full of water too. I carried on principally because I was with a mate. It makes all the difference, even if he's prone to miserableness as mine was. Got Best in Class D.

When I did the Exeter in 2003 it was minus 7 all through the night. I was riding alone but latched on to a pack of mates riding together. I had to carry on as I couldn't face the ride back until the sun had come up. Got a Silver.

When I did the Lands End in 2010 on a perfectly restored R80G/S Paris Dakar I wiped £3,000 off it's value overnight. Fool. It was a great trial and I was clean until the last section, Bluehills 2. The locals had dumped a load of mud and pig shit on it and I stopped. Gutted.

I think I've retired now.

Persevere.

Steve.

Thanks Steve.

I did it on my g/s in 2013 and got a finisher's certificate and again on my Alp in 2015.
