MOT test for vehicles over 40 years old will be abolished

Remember that if you take it off SORN, it has to be insured.

Didn't know that. I was under the impression the vehicle only needed to be insured if used on the road, whether on SORN or not.
Every day's school day.

I thought that the law changed recently such that vehicles on SORN HAD to be Insured !

Or did I dream that ?

(I have a car on SORN that is Insured).

Bob.

Not that Im aware of ,as long as its not stored or parked on public land no insurance is required.

Totally incorrect, no requirement to insure any vehicle on SORN.

I have off road cover for the workshop to cover my own bikes which are long term projects.
This includes vandalism, fire or water damage.

You will need short-term cover to take it for MOT, and then it can be taxed or stay on SORN?

Any vehicle which is taxed MUST be insured.
If you have a vehicle and the insurance expires before the road tax, you are required to SORN it.

Why would a vehicle need to be insured that is not being used on the road?

Because its the law.
Its called continuous insurance enforcement. Became law in 2011.
There is an offence of "being the keeper of an uninsured vehicle.
Only exemption is if its SORNed.

Because they have records of all vehicles, and they know which is insured, and which is sorned.....they don't need to see you driving it....the computer can just spit out a £100 fine.
If you own it, and its not SORNed, it must be insured whether you are driving on the roads or not.

It's not enough to just wait until the exemption date or age thereof and simply remove from SORN.

You have to change the classification to Historic Vehicle.

Has anyone unSORNED a vehicle online, which is exempt from Tax due to age?

Yeap just done mine . Got the tax free and it didn’t realise the bike is not insured and has no “mot “ at the moment according to them !

New registration

I have three bikes that are on the nova system, they are all over 40 years old so qualify for tax and mot exemption. Will I still have to get the bike through an mot to register it with an age related plate

I don’t think you will . You’re effectively self verifying that the bikes are to mot standard

My bike has been recently “taxed”, but MOT is due now.
Is there Anyway to apply for no MOT status now, or do I have to wait until the next time the “tax” is due?
